Johannesburg - The 7-year-old boy hit and injured by a minibus taxi driven by Matome Thamage, is said to have sustained brain damage from the accident, according to a newspaper report on Tuesday.

The family of the Diepsloot boy are claiming more than R1m in damages from the Road Accident Fund, The Star reported.

An RAF investigator in possession of the boy's medical records and lawyers' letters said the boy had sustained brain damage after Thamage knocked him down while picking up a passenger on July 19.

Matome is out on bail after he was recently charged for allegedly knocking down a woman and dragging her beneath his vehicle for about 700 metres in Lonehill, Sandton.

RAF investigator Zachariah Nkosi said he had obtained a statement from Thamage at the Johannesburg Prison last week.

In the statement, Thamage said he had stopped to pick up passengers and was driving off when he heard a bang. He stopped and saw that he had hit a boy.

And the plot thickens.

Poor kid. Another taxi incident that didn't involve speeding - but wait, the solution is to reduce the speed limit and not charge taxis toll fees.
