Planning a renovation and since I have solar installed don't want a tall chimney to shade out my panels Anybody have any practical 2 cents about these extractors or recommendations? Pretty sure it will work well for smoke but how reliable are they?

beyond what you are planning the chimney needs to be a certain height so better be careful about that

Building plan says 1m above roof which I presume is the legal bare minimum. I know it should be taller than the apex for decent draw but this is a flat roof joined to the main house so going up 3m is going to screw me significantly in the winter on the solar side.

good thing you know this, I often drive and see one of our neighbours chimney over a significant part of the array

The taller the chimney the better as it will create a good draft of hot air traveling upwards

Yeah I don't want to be 'that guy' hence trying to figure out if these extractors are reliable. All very well they work but if I constantly have to climb up to troubleshoot and replace every year or two then I will have to go tall and skinny. Summer no issues due to excess but trying my damnedness to keep that middle finger extended at Eskom

I was like wtf why do you need a fan for an outside braai, then saw that you have one inside the house. Pretty good idea.

The joys of living in Cape Town. Has to be indoor/outdoor for maximum benefit. Nothing worse than a smokey room though so want to get this done right

If it actually works it will be great. I have an inside braai with chimney going 2 storeys high and sometimes when making fire with charcoal it will throw smoke into the room until there is enough heat to start going upwards.

Got one for the inside braai on the farm.
Works very well. So well in fact that you'll not smell the braai until you take the meat off.
Obviously it does not work during loadshedding, which is a pain (no solar yet).

Been going strong for 4+years now.

What is the height of your chimney and size of the braai?

All dimensions are wrong. Was an outside braai that I had enclosed after I bought the place.
Was forced to install one.
The chimney is 7m high, but sits behind the/parallel with the main house roof.
During winter NW. winds the smoke is pushed back into the, now braai room. Braai is 2m x 1m x .8m (WxHxD).
Plan is to have a pre-built steel braai installed, chimney inside the current brick one.

Hot fuzz ,Did you get one of the Braai Buddi extractors ? Thinking of installing one myself …. Would appreciate any feedback - especially regarding noise level ?

No I didn't as I decided to move the braai instead.
