I am busy building a braai room on the side of my house. It is about 11m x 3m in size. What would be the best type of lighting for this area? Fluorescent tubes? 1 or 2 sets?

What works good for you if you have a similar area at your place?

How energy efficient is fluorescent lights?

Fluorescent feels too much like an office/hospital, I would go for LED spot lights (Like those 3 spot light fittings that you can move independently, not down-lights). Point them in strategic places i.e. Onto the table, Bar area etc and not into the guests eyes. They will also be very energy efficient, provide a warmer feeling than those horrible florescent bulbs and you can adjust their orientation based on your setup.

The reason I'm asking is because I have a fluorescent light there now and don't like it much.

I have 3 sets of those in my house, but not LED lights. 2 sets in the kitchen & 1 in the dining area of our lounge. The bulbs sure are pricey. R20 a bulb and they usually pop right after a power failure. I will have a look at the price of spot light fittings.

The LED spot-lights go for around R120 (Have seen specials where they cost less). Go for a decent one with a good amount of Lumens. Some are dimmable, so there are quite a few out there, just do a little research.

Yeah, the traditional ones blow easy and consume a lot electricity.

It would be a carport like roof, so that's corrugated iron sheeting with wooden rafters & beams.
