A friend of mine wants to get her teeth fixed (her top front 4 teeth are slightly crooked). She got a quote for lingual braces (they attach at the back of the teeth) for about R30k. Anyone had experiences with those? Would veneers be a better option? How much would veneers cost and has anyone had them? Thanks.

Edit : My reasoning is if veneers even cost upto R5k per tooth it works out cheaper to get 4 veneers and they'll probably look better.

If veneers are an option and the defective position is not too drastic I would definitely go for veneers. I don't know the difference in price though.

With veneers do they place them over the existing tooth or remove the tooth entirely or what? Depends on the situation?

Veneers are very thin layers that are placed onto your existing tooth which was shaped before. No tooth is removed.

Compared to crowns which aver cemented OVER the shaped tooth and implants which replace the entire tooth.

A crown usually costs R3000-6000 per tooth, veneers are usually cheaper. So I am almost certain the whole procedure would probably cost a third compared to braces.

Thanks alot. Wish she had got a quote at the same time as she got the braces quote. If she goes again she'll have to pay again and orthodonist consultation fees are astronomical. So just wanted to see if anyone here had a rough estimate.

If it's under R3k that's not bad at all. Might even get some myself then for a better :D

You shouldn't forget though that even the strongest of all veneers, porcelain veneers, may have to be replaced after 10 to 15, sometimes even 20 years depending on the tooth. For the front teeth you can expect anything between 10 and 15 years. The advantage of braces is that none of the natural teeth are touched or shaped, it is an adjustment that lasts for a lifetime.

Without pictures all our views are useless.

I got veneers on my 6 front teeth and it was only 12k, Amazing stuff is all i can say. I had braces for 4 years prior to getting them though.

They basically cut the majority of my front teeth away so it might work depending on how badly scew they are.

Was your plan to get veneers all along and the braces were part of that? Or were you not happy with the outcome of the braces and decided to get veneers afterwards?

Well when the braces came off the glue had left marks, so the teeth were not looking great. White spots. Also smoking etc left them in poor shape. The outcome of the braces was nothing short of amazing. I could stick my thumb between my bottom and top teeth if i bit down, straightened all my teeth and the big over bite was gone. The braces were amazing. I have my parents to thank for that, even though money was tight they somehow found all that money to get my teeth straight. My front teeth were slightly scew still and the glue from the braces had left some marks.

The veneers were just to compliment the amazing job the braces has done. The veneers are just amazing. They don't lose colour, all the teeth look perfect. Amazing stuff is all i can say but without braces they would have been pointless. Make sure if she is only doing the four that they get the colour right or it will look funny with 4 teeth brighter than the other 2.

I'd recommend bleaching before the procedure anyway. There's nothing sexier for chicks than a shiny smile.

Well I got a quote a year or two back from my dentist, and it worked out to R2k - R3k per tooth. Thing is that it needs to be maintained. Like when a veneer chips or breaks it needs to be replaced, I mean what are the chances of you breaking a tooth compared to a veneer. You're also not allowed certain (hard) foods, as it might cause chips or breakage, so I figure in the long run, a few thousand more might be better to pay for braces and it's your own teeth.

I've also weighed up all kinds of different options

Braces. If you're teeth are good just straighten and whiten them. Veneers need to be replaced after 15 years. Bad veneers give you a chipmunk look.
