Brainfarts at work and other gobsmacking stories

And that is why we automate **** :D
These days I do - work smarter, not harder :p

I have another story, this time it's the tale of the clash of the ticketing systems.

Mid 2020, I'm still setting up mine. Neither my nor the other party's ticketing system is correctly configured.

They send me an invoice (automated system) at 18:00. My ticketing system replies that the email has been received and will be replied to within 24 hours. Their system replies that my email has been received and will be attended to shortly. My ticketing system replies that the email has been received and will be replied to within 24 hours. Their system replies that my email has been received and will be attended to shortly.

Repeat this until you wake up the next morning to more than 2k new emails.

I managed effectively this while configuring a VPN on our server at a datacenter remotely, something not really in my skillset but you do what needs to be done in a small company.
I remember clicking "apply" and the RDP session immediately disconnecting. I had to drive to the data centre first thing in the morning when they were able to provide access to the server, to go fix my **** up.
Awesome, you owned up and tried something new!
You also went and sorted out what you broke.
We need more people like you.

I once set up a new internet connection for the company I worked at. Cisco 2500 router connected to a kilostream (BT equivalent of diginet), with ISDN backup.
Got it all up and working on the ISDN until the kilostream circuit came up.
Thursday evening before a long weekend I reconfigged the ISDN to bond both B channels for 128kb throughput instead of 64.
Monday morning, find an email from the ISP asking what I was doing.
ISDN had been dialing up the 2nd b channel, getting rejected by the ISP because they don't support bonded channels, disconnecting. Wait 1 second. DIal up again. Get rejected, disconnect.
Repeat for 72 hours.

Every call was billed by the telco providing the ISDN ...

I once replaced a DB with a blank one, my balls up is I over wrote it, and all client data gone. Luckily the client had a backup but was 3 years out of date but here we are :)

Go diigital....Go paperless. Now I can slap a few lines of code toghether when in need. But these guys.... May God have mercy on their souls. Lying that much to get a programming job will get you personally aquainted with Lucy in the flesh.

That was quite some time ago. These days I stay very far away from server configs.

Or looking at the nude pics they took of themselves and saved onto the file server.

Reminds me of working helpdesk at varsity - student comes up to me:"Can you go tell the student *points at student* to stop watching porn and touching himself at the computer." - Dude sitting in a packed computer lab, hand down his pants, focussed on the screen. Not even in the back row or anything. Just skinning his polony in the middle of everything. At least he had headphones in, but I was scared of touching him for fear of being in a splash zone.

Anyway, dude got his lab access revoked and we got a new pron site to block. I still haven't been refunded for the psychological damage of that one.
