I sent in my Hilux 2.0 Vvti for service. Got a call from Toyota saying that my front disc pads need to be replaced. Total cost close to R2000 inc vat. I find this totally a rip off. I phoned around for other quotes. And a friend of a friend, who is a qualified mechanic with his own workshop, said he could change it for R50 per side. He can get a good pair of brake pads for around R300-R350. Would changing it other than using Toyota have any effect on my service plan?

It shouldnt.
Just find out what pads you have, buy a set and fit for R50 a side.

If your car is in service plan shouldn't they change the brakes for free? or did you mean warranty plan and not service plan?

No it is a service plan. Brake pads are not covered in the service plan.

Warranty plan? I think you're confusing maintenance plans and service plans.

As to the original question: it shouldn't. However in a worst case scenario it could have an impact on future warranty claims. To keep a manufacturer's warranty intact, it is normally required that only authorised work be done on the car, by dealer workshops, for the duration thereof. If anything goes wrong that could be attributed to the non-dealer work carried out on the brakes, you'll be up **** creek without a paddle.

Are you sure its not the disks that they have quoted you for? They told me after 30,000kms that my pads AND disks needed replacing ... I think that they were just chanceing it.
They just did the pads in the end after my protest and it only came to R400 - R500 if I recall correctly.

Ok just got off the phone from McCarthy Toyota Dbn North. Was informed that it would not affect the service plan or warranty.

Yes it was just the brake pads. It has 10% life. Would last me another 2000 - 3000 km more. Toyota used to be one of the cheapest vehicles to maintain. I guess the dealerships are just changing that.

Schit like this makes me mal. R2000 for front brake pads?

If you are worried about service plan check what brand pads are on the car already and replace with the same ones, it's probably Ferodo's or something like that.

I guess they have to recover money somewhere on vehicles with service plans.

Get ATE pads not Ferodos.. Ferodo pads are hard and grind your disk...

ATE was the OEM for Toyota until very recently but the spares dude is not sure who it is these days, might even still be ATE.
