I have a warped disc on my car i think and was wondering if anyone knew of a good skimming place in Joburg ?

its my front right disc, makes my steering wheel vibrate, and car pull to a side when i break hard!

Don't know but any Tyger wheel n tyre normally does this...on acr skimming is new, but upwards of R300 per disc.

Also a question...

my pad is vibrating against the disc...I stopped and checked, i fiddled the pad a little and it seems as though it was loose!!!

Does this mean the
a)Disc is kaput
b)pad is loose and needs to be put back in place somehow?

found a place down the road from me R300 for both discs..

a loose pad wouldn't be good ! to me either means its not seated correctly. or could be the wrong size even.

well i felt the awesomeness of a warped disc at 140 yesterday.. you don't quite brake straight when you slam brakes at that speed :/

@4cer - replace your rear brakes should the shudder return.

This happened with myself - skimmed the front brakes, and the shudder returned after a while, and skimmed it yet again  and the shudder returned yet again

Then I decided to replace all the brakes on the car - and had new front discs put in at the same time, and the shudder haven't returned by now, and I have braked hard several times :D

Isn't it unsafe to skim your discs twice?

There's a minimum limit - if you go past that limit, then you're playing with fire as the brake discs might crack and break when doing intense braking (such as when towing a caravan and having to brake sharply).

Mine was past the limit and had cracks in  therefore the replacement.

I'd advise against skimming brake discs for two reasons:
1. The thinner the disc the more likely it is to warp again or disintegrate under hard braking.
2. A brand new disc costs about R400 to R500 for the average, non-luxury vehicle. I replaced 4 ventilated brake discs and 4 sets of brake pads on two vehicles (RunX and Etude) for less than R2500.

well skimming costs R300 for both.

Two new Discs is R2400...

so ya :/

but i must look into the back brakes, cause i only got this shudder shortly after the back brakes where "checked" maybe they forgot to put something back...

thing is.. it only vibrates under braking from about 120... and pulls quite hard to the left under hard braking.

but if i just brake normally, or from like 80. There is no issue.

What car ?

You can buy Discs for about R 250 each ;) No name ofc, but they work wonders, I replaced mine on my Polo which took a beating and I never had no problems with those no name brands. It's the same metal compount I can't see why one would pay R 2500 for it

@ Pitbull - we bought our discs from Midas when they had a special on it :D

Same discs still going just fine, no shudders or other funny business so far.

Besides, buying "branded" discs from Toyota et al just means you pay for the privilege to have a big carton box with the manufacturer's logo on.

Alfa 147 uprated brakes :/

look at the size of the brakes on your polo :p your front brakes are probably smaller then my back brakes :/ so so ya as they get bigger they cost more. im not sure exactly what size mine are, but on comparing about the same size as a GTi...

Mine Polo was upgraded also, since it came with Drum at the back which had to be replaced when I did the Polotec conversion. Who ever is charging you R 2500 is smoking something ;)

Is that for 2 or 4 discs?
