Good evening,
Have a question please. Took my car in for a service and manufacturer service centre advised I need brake pads replaced... coat quoted was around R2500/R2800. I advised them not to replace and on service report it just states front brakes pads needs replacing. Called around and got some cheaper quotes ...

however my question is.. does one have to have your brakes skimmed when fitting new brake pads or not??

Asking so to ensure I'm asking for correct items to be quoted as so far I've just asked for brake pad replacement quotes which coke in around R950

Thanking you in advance

No you don’t and often it’s near as close in price to just replace the discs when not doing at the dealer.

You only need to skim discs that are in a bad state but still have some life left.

Personally never bothered with it and never had a problem.

It’s one of those things the dealers probably do to prevent comebacks.

Skimming is cheaper, if you had skimming more expensive than new discjs someone was trying to scam you.

Sorry I worded that badly, not saying discs are cheaper, will correct it now.

I’m saying the pricing is often so close when you are not using the dealer that you may as well just put on the new discs and call it a day.

Yeah, I would still keep the OEM and skim them if it's still safe to do so, unless you are sure the discs you are getting are a good brand.

Also buying discs gives you the DIY option if you are so inclined where skimming isn’t really a home job.

Usually not hard to figure out what the OEM is and just buy the same.

Back in 2015 used to cost me R2500 to do pads and discs all round on a GTI with OEM parts.

It unlikely that you need your discs skimmed if you aren't sure about it. If your brake pads were that badly worn you would have felt it while driving. You'd know when you're grinding metal on metal for more than a day.

How old are your discs?

Another quote that came in was around R1350 for front brake pads and skimming... however the Dealer report stated front brake pads to be replaced... no mention of skimming... so not sure if I should do pads and skimming but since dealer report mentioned no skimming I'm thinking just best to replace pads ..

You only need skimming when the discs have developed grooves and are uneven, it's not an automatic thing that you need to skim discs if you fit new brake pads.

Nope.. there's definitely no metal on metal sound at all when I break.. but I do feel my braking had a slower pull than normal.. like takes me a while to come to a stop.. but definitely no metal screeching at all... uhm how old are my discs? Lol.. I'm second owner on thr car and have it 6 years.. 2012 kia picanto... hardly drove at all during lockdown .. as worked from home

Just don't have extra finances for skimming as budget is real tight at present...

Uhm.. can you repeat that in girl talk please LOL
Okay, I meant I prefer keeping the original discs and skimming them if necessary and if it's still safe to do so, especially if you drive an expensive or performance car, because the new discs you will get from Midas might not be the same quality as the one you have as OEM, (Original equipment manufacturer).

Ignore all of that if you are driving a run of the mill 66kW car, it does not make any difference.

Automated came in with the best quote... hope their service is excellent too.
Thank you gents for the feedback given.. appreciate it
