I have no telephone lines at all

If I want to install ADSL, I need a telephone for which the installation costs are R350 or something like that. I am going to take a DSL complete package from an ISP (most probably WebAfrica or OpenWeb), but for that, an additional R400 is required for installation of the DSL line.

Do you have to do both seperately? Paying R750 odd rand is not pocket change

You can do a self-install on the ADSL so you don't have to pay for that.

Self install ... use the telephone jack plug it into the router's power supply, connect pc and voila?

As far as I know, that additional R400 rand is for them to actually convert your telephone line to an ADSL line.Taking 5 minutes to connect a copper cable in the exchange for R400?

self-install as in goto Telkom's website and enable your line for adsl. or some such thing.

That's how we get screwed by Telkom.

There have been a few threads about this. Here's what you do.

Order a new phone line with Closer Plan 2, which includes free installation (not sure whether Plan 1 also includes free installation). Wait until the line is installed, then order ADSL from Telkom and opt for self-install. Once this is done, get your ISP of choice to transfer the ADSL portion of the line to them.

Net cost of installation: R0

Just a pity about all the hoops you have to jump through first.

Cool

Thanks alot for the help. Was just wondering about all the hoops and how NOT to get screwed by Telkom

I just off the phone for my line install " sometime in the next year or two " :erm:

I got told if i order my Tele-line" new line installation" and ADSL together they will charge for Installing the Tele-line and also an installation fee for ADSL.

So only ordered my Tele-line for now and once thats installed i will order my ADSL and then you can opt for self install due to you having an Tele-line already.
