Branded PC's

Actually depending on what type of deal you get you may end up landing a PC that more than undercuts what you may have paid elsewhere. You have to match up the price of the parts inside the branded PC with a list that you can put together online and compare the prices. Very often if the machine comes with a Windows 7 Professional licence, its a heavily discounted one.

And if you do buy the branded PC, contemplate paying the extra R130 or so to upgrade to Windows 8 when it comes out. If you don't like it, you can always switch back to 7.

I think is worth if you buy one of those "all-in-one" with touchscreen or maybe some of those "funny shape" square boxes (Like the Mac box pc) where the size and shape is more important than the actual content.
Otherwise I rather go for generic PC

They are very over-priced. If you build it yourself you can save over a grand. If you don't know how to build one get a friend or someone who does know how to help you out.
