Recommendations for a good brandy to give to someone as a birthday gift? R500-R1 000 per bottle budget.

I did a brandy tasting at KWV last year where they did the normal 12 and 15 year. Honestly you can call me barbaric but I would also still mix it with coke, I probably don't have the pallet to enjoy it. It only burns your tongue (go figure) without giving a good taste.
Bought this for a mate's birthday without thinking it through...
Got to watch him drink it with Coke Zero....
KWV 5 year is the sweet spot for mixing with coke. Not very classy though.

If you mix with Coke, just buy the 3YO

I though it would have been alright...
Anyway...lesson learnt!

Im not a brandy drinker, prefer whizzers myself but I dont mind that KWV...

PS,

Remy Martin (cognac). The recipient is normally too scared to add Coke etc.

Or, if he/she does add a mixer, you should give serious thought as to whether you want them as a friend

Or, to be different, how about an Armagnac ?
