They work on the neural processes that underlie such mental activities as attention, perception, learning, memory, language, planning and decision-making, usually by altering the balance of the chemical neurotransmitters involved in these processes. This week a report* from the Academy of Medical Sciences, a British learned society, says that a large number of such brain-affecting drugs are likely to emerge over the next few decades.

I've got mixed emotions about those things...

Jep. These new drugs go far beyond that. Read up on some of the first hand accounts of provigil. The thought of competing against people juiced up on stuff like that is not so much fun.

It's nothing new really, people have been taking things like coffee to work longer/better and drugs like marijuana to stimulate their creativity for a while now.

I can think of any number of science fiction books I've read that had a storyline about drugs being used to enhance peoples reality, unfortunately they'll probably all be banned like the ones we have at the moment.

Modafinil and Ritalin are available by prescription only.

It's nothing new really, people have been taking things like coffee to work longer/better and drugs like marijuana to stimulate their creativity for a while now.

The main difference is that the new stuff like provigil improves focus without making you feel like you want to bounce off the walls (Pot of Coffee). i.e. the stimulation of the brain is limited to certain areas.
