Ever the black sheep, the Cheetahs on Tuesday were officially sidelined from South Africa's PRO Rugby future.

In a move that was widely expected, SA Rugby's general council voted to have the Bulls, Lions, Sharks and Stormers as the four franchises that will participate in a mooted PRO16 expansion.

It's a cruel blow for the central franchise, who took a giant leap of faith back in mid-2017 in moving to Europe along with the Southern Kings after both were cut from Super Rugby.

We lack a lucrative competition.

Instead of relying on overseas based competitions I reckon its worth investigating reinvigorating the Currie Cup. Never be able to compete with the Heineken Cup clubs salaries obviously but playing in SA might have other benefits.

I reckon SARU should look at taking 5 years making the Currie Cup the defacto Southern Hemisphere competition, to a degree that overseas based players wishing to measure themselves against the best consider competing in the Currie Cup in SA.
 
I rarely get angry about sport, But SARU can Go Feck themselves, you Blerrie whores! You did not want us in the Super Series, we made a plan and moved to PRo, you see that it can work and promptly get us removed and put your other slut sides in!

Go screw yourselves sideways, I will never ever support another South African side of any team again....

Count yourself lucky - you still have a team. The Cheetahs will live to fight another day. SARU killed the Kings.

The willingness to compete isn't there from the smaller teams. They just fold over and die. Sometimes the Griquas put up a bit of a fight, but the rest is useless.

People are tired of the same 4 teams playing each other 10 times a year.

We lack interference-free administration. The coaching personnel are there underutilised.

No! You don't get this! It's always been about The Cheetahs fighting to survive, yet when we have a team that shines, The bastard bigger unions move in and buy our players, we are the heart of SA rugby, the bloody heart, and year after year, season after season, our heart keeps getting ripped out!

/No offence towards you Bwana boet, just very angry now....... it's yet again another bitter pill for our union to swallow.....

The players move from team to team, so you may as well support any of the teams.

Except the Bulls. Or Sharks. Or Lions.
Otherwise any Stormers team is fine.

I get it, but you've pretty much described the Kings as well. In 2017 (after the Kings finished above the Cheetahs and Bulls in SR) SARU held off announcing the SK participation in Pro14 until the very last minute. All their key players left, and who can blame them, because SARU wouldn't make a decision publicly. They've been on the back foot ever since.

I'm to trying to diminish how badly the Cheetahs have been treated, but at least you still have a franchise. SARU killed ours last week.

We used to have one of the nicest pitches around but then they got rid of the stadium management and the municipality took it over.
 
No country can possibly build a sport up by cutting back on local teams competing in a strong, healthy and competitive competition such as the Currie Cup was.
We need that back, involving the many teams that there were, including our neighbouring countries as well.

THAT is what grassroots sports development is all about.
 
People saying they should sue them but lets be honest ,nobody will really win from that.

The union system is also problematic, as now no club can really succeed or become professional, unlike soccer.

And if you are stuck in a bad region, like the east rand with the Valke then there's not much hope.
 
Let us be honest, can South Africa financially support multiple teams at a high level?

The stadiums are almost always empty unless its a semi or a final when it comes to domestic games. I've been to Ellis Park for Saturday afternoon games and I'd be impressed if there were 10,000 people there. From what I see on TV, the other unions/franchises don't do any better. Do the smaller unions even pull crowds?

Aside from poor gate revenue, this also has an affect on sponsors.

Perhaps this is the fault of Super Rugby growing far too bloated? Super Rugby crowds were terrible and on the decline and by the time the domestic season starts people have had enough of rugby. I swear it felt like you had been watching a Super Rugby season play out over several years and then wham, Currie Cup.
