The last time I bothered to almost renew, AI image manipulation to backdate a hand signed independent eye exam didn't exist.
Great things come to those who wait.... even better things come to those who wait indefinitely.
I will fake the papers, then keep them in my "I could have if I wanted to" file.

I've made 6 bookings to renew my licence card. Every time it expires I just make another one.

Got pulled over by the cops two weeks ago and I got out of getting fined by showing him the booking that I made.

The whole system is a joke. Only reason those of us who do do it is in hope that if enough set an example our roads may be safer.

I'm glad they kept the heavy duty renewals at 5 years. Except for me, of course, since mine is an EC1, so mine is 5 years. :(
 
Did common sense finally win? Inside South Africa’s shift to 10-year driving licences

The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) has welcomed Cabinet's approval to extend the validity of South Africa's driving licence cards for light motor vehicles from five years to 10 years, describing the decision as "long overdue" and a victory for motorists and common sense.

"This decision is almost six years overdue, but it is a victory for motorists and for common sense," OUTA CEO Wayne Duvenage said.

"The government has finally accepted that forcing motorists through an inefficient renewal system every five years wastes time and money without making our roads safer."

The organisation, which has campaigned for the change since 2020, said the move would reduce unnecessary administrative burdens while easing pressure on the country's licensing system.

Cabinet approves 10-year validity period
The announcement was made by Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni during a media briefing on Thursday following Wednesday's Cabinet meeting.

"Cabinet approved the extension of the validity period of driving licences for Codes A, A1, B and EB from five to 10 years," Ntshavheni said.

The extended validity period will apply only to light motor vehicles.

Heavy commercial and public transport vehicles will continue to follow the existing two- or five-year renewal cycles, while Professional Driving Permits (PrDPs) will remain subject to a two-year renewal period.

Ntshavheni said the change aligns with international best practice, improves administrative efficiency, reduces the frequency of renewals and eases demand on licensing centres.

However, the new validity period is not yet in effect.

"The implementation of the extended validity period requires legislative amendments," she said.

Motorists must continue renewing expired driving licence cards under the current five-year validity period until the necessary amendments have been processed and gazetted.
