Breaking News - Coup in Thailand

Tanks are rolling through the streets of Thailand's capital city after the Thai military attempted to seize power and oust Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra while he was at the United Nations in New York. Thaksin has declared a state of emergency, while Gen. Sonthi Boonyaratkalin declared martial law.

Sonthi, who is known to be close to Thailand's revered constitutional monarch, will serve as acting prime minister, army spokesman Col. Akarat Chitroj said, according to The AP. Sonthi is a Muslim in this Buddhist-dominated nation, AP reported.

The Thai army seized power on Tuesday without firing a shot, dismissed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's government, revoked the Constitution and promised a swift return to democracy after political reforms.

The seizure will be temporary and power "returned to the people" soon, coup spokesperson retired Lieutenant General Prapart Sakuntanak said on all Thai television channels.

Great indication that this will indeed be 'temporary'.

I don't know much about the politics of the region. All these big shots look like scum to me.

Also interesting that this Prime Minister's stake in a telecoms company was a sore point.
