Well before they left they would have been registered, so what is the problem?
As long as they are on the voters roll, then they should be fine.

I know of plenty who are there and only of voting age now but living abroad. They never had the chance to register to vote, but are SA citizens
Sure It might not be 1000's of people but there are people who would love to vote but are not registered because of the red tape that was in the way. Now it's removed but they can't vote still.But like someone mentioned above now, it's but just a small step in the right direction. They will be registered and able to vote for the next election then

The Gov (ANC) pretty much conceded that at the begining of the case. They just wanted to stop the registering of more voters. This is a joke. Some mickey mouse judge in the ANC's pocket throws out the case preventing the date of the election being finalised (or whatever it's called) because he did not like the way the case was presented, without even looking at the facts. Now the ANC has got their way. No massive votes against them. They will happily go out and register prisoners (who should have no rights at all) to vote, but the people who the criminals chased out of the country can't vote.
By the time the next election comes, they will have changed the rules to prevent the overseas people from voting, again.

AFAIK the Election Law stipulates that there should be a 90-day window between the date that the President of the RSA decides/announces the voting date and the actual voting date.
This year that rule was ignored.
If someone in the know (Hugh Glenister, perhaps?) could bring them to book about this, the courts might instruct the IEC to bring about a new, postponed, voting date - and hopefully another chance for all to register as well.

Registerd voters. But they were not given a change to register.

The unregistered people wouldn't be able to vote even if they were in the country, cause voter registration closed in Feb.
Why is this a surprise, I understood that after the proclamation of the election date, voter registration cannot be allowed. Unless the election was postponed there was never a chance for them to register.
Should they have tried to stop the president from making the proclamation before this matter was decided?

Basically a lower court ruled in favour of the teacher. The FF then launched an urgent interdict to prevent the date being proclaimed once the date is proclaimed, there can be no more registrations. A judge threw out this application because he thought the lawyers gave the gov too little time to respond to the urgent interdict. He completely ignored the facts of the case and said as much in his ruling.
IMO, the con court should have taken this into account when making their ruling and should have allowed a period of registrations before the date which they did in the past when prisoners had a similar case.
I don't believe this action could have been taken before now as the ANC would have been able to change the constitution to prevent it.

The national voters roll was only established in 1999 and the iec in 1997.
Aaargh - now to wait for the registration decision.
What decision? I though they had already said if you're not registered then it is too late for this election.

can anyone clarify?
i thought it was only people who were out of the country temp
who will be allowed to vote. meaning people on work contracts overseas, touring sa teams, etc. from what i understood it did not cover every south african living abroad.

If you're a registered voter living abroad you can now vote but you "must notify the chief electoral officer of their intention to vote by March 27"
