Breaks squealing/whining

Took my citi in for a service today, and just got a call about the squealing/whining sound I reported my breaks making.

They say they need to clean the breaks etc.. R850. The breaks themselves are fine, just dirt or dust causing it. So I told them I'd get back to them, and after some googling it seems you can just buy a some anti-squeal compound or brake grease which should sort it out.

Anyone tired this? Is the compound/grease easily available to buy in shops?

Or should I just tell them to go ahead.. R850 seems excessive though for a simple sounding job.

if your brakes are squealing it generally means that there is some metal on metal friction taking place. This is common in some brakepads such as some ferodo pads, well last i heard.

If i were you i would just replace the pads for that price, honestly would rather put on better pads than add some grease or other compound that would/could reduce brake force or the cooling of the disc etc.

Discs or drum breaks?

If disks you can clean the disks with brake cleaner. Apply some copaslip (copperslip?) to the back of the brake pads where it contacts the caliper piston.

Keep grease away from your brakes!

Heh yeah, called the local Autoshop - Break cleaner R60

Were one of those cheapo masks at least, not sure if brake pads still contain asbestos.

Holy mother, I replaced my Corsa's discs and pads with new Ferodo's plus a brake fluid change for that price.

These dealers sure know how to rip a guy of his hard earned money (I'm not saying it's just VW, GM does the same thing)

Drum brakes don't squeal and don't need to be replaced often (I've got a Corsa with 200 000km and the drums are still fine), squealing is a disc brake thing.

R850 is a total rip off!

Where DO these bastards come up with these telephone number prices???!

Squealing brakes can be caused by all sorts of things from actual grit between pad and disc, to pads that have lost their tensioning metal clips. None of which would cost R850 to fix!!!

Crazy crazy crazy! *Bangs head in frustration*
