Bridged connections

Hey guys

A friend told me that it is possible to set my router to connect to internent like using a dial-up modem, and when i dont wana use it i can disconnect.

He said something about me having to "bridge connections" but he had it done for him and ive tried looking around but i cant figure this dang thing out.

I got another account that i really wana use but i cant even figure out how to get that right. If i set this bridge connection thing will i be able to choose what account i wana use?

Any help would be much apericiated

What router do you use?
 
Why do you want to do that? If you want the ability to connect and disconnect it's better to setup that up via the router because when you use bridge you lose the hardware firewall your router has.
 
I have a Mega 100WR, i got it free with my adsl thing.

Is there anyway i can do something like that? That i dial and i can choose which account i wana dial with? Just put in the username of whichever account and im good to go?
 
Start up your favourite webbrowser and in the address bar type: 10.0.0.2 <Enter>

Where it asks for the router username and password use admin for both.

Click on Advanced --> System Password. Change both the username and password to something else you will remember. Save settings.

Click on Advanced --> WAN --> quickstart.

Where you see username and password is where you will enter the account details of your ISP. Make sure that On Demand is unticked. Apply. Save Settings.

What you might also do is decrease the Keep Alive value to something shorter. Essentially it should disconnect after those amount of minutes pass without activity on the router (activity including accessing the internet).

On this same page you will see there is both a Connect and Disconnect button.

EDIT: Why are you concerned about connecting and disconnecting?

I have use 56k for so many years, it almost feels wrong not being able to disconnect...and i dont really like the idea of it just sitting there while im not using it.

OK i did everything now as you said...But how do i know that the account changed? Nothing really seemed to happen.

When i go back into the page it shows the account i put in, so does that mean its connected to it?

If thats the case then ure my hero :)
 
Webbrowser --> Enter 10.0.0.2 <Enter>

It might or not ask for username and password. If it does enter the new one you established.

You will get to the Basic page.

Look for Internet (3rd one down on mine). If it says Connected then you are connected.

I always leave my DSL on because I trust that the passwords to my ISP account and my router will take some breaking. Always helps to have a password (for both) longer than 7 characters with both numbers and letters in it.

So unless you are downloading something leaving it on should not cost you money if your usernames and passwords are secure.

All this may be a bit much to someone new to networking and using routers..

Handz, to achieve what you are asking is extremely simple, provided you have Windows XP installed on your pc.

Via your control panel, open Network Connections and select "Create a new connection" icon to the left of the window.

Click on Next
Select 'Connect to the Internet', then click on Next
Select 'Set my connection manually', click on Next
Select 'Connect using a broadband connection that requires a username and password', click on Next

Fill in the required details... and there you go, all done.

Note: No need to bridge anything, just make sure you make a connection for each account. You might want to remove any account details from your router after doing this.

Cadavre - If the router has already established a connection, ie it is not in bridge mode, I don't think the account created in XP will authenticate. I am pretty sure that to have a connection originate from the PC you need to have the router in bridge mode.
 
Nope, works fine without bridge mode. Both my routers (Dlink & Marconi) work fine with XP's PPPoE client like that.
 
Oh well that's something to know. Does that work for the Mega100WR though? I know that if I try to bring up a connection on my PC in Linux with a connection running on the router, the connection from the PC fails. yet when in bridge mode there is no issue. But XP is different.

Though of course your suggestion would mean that if there is already an account setup on the router it would remain connected. Which is not what the OP wants.

Havent really played around with the Mega100WR. Only had access to a USB cable (didnt feel like making a network cable). But I havent had any problems getting linux or *BSD to establish connections redardless of the mode set on the router.

Out of interest, how did you try set up the connection in linux?
 
I wanted to do this at my house for a gaming account and a normal account. I have a netgear D834 thing...

I created the ppoe connections all the 3 pcs in the house and set my modem/router to Modem only. However, there was a problem that i just cant figure out.

Once i was connected through the (dial up) type connection, the packets would stop recieveing after around 10 minutes. All accounts work perfectly if the username are in the router.

Any ideas??

I use Linux rather than XP. Though I still have my XP install on my PC.

Mypro-D : Try setting static IPs on the network for the PCs.

Lol, im a no0b with this sort of thing :P

Yes happens everytime, although the other day its worked for around an hour. Then it just stops working. I phoned WA to see if they maybe had any ideas, but they said no :(
 
I'm not familiar with your router. But can you look around the settings to find out how often the IP leases renew?
 
Are the disconnecting pcs connected wirelessly? Maybe you have a weak signal

Yep, mine is connected like that. Its signal is full and it does not disconnect, it only stops recieving info. Its very odd and I have no idea what to do :(
