Brilliant Binoculars

Oh darling, if you think binoculars are expensive, wait till you see the price of high end cameras.

For the camera snobs, stfu, have you seen the price of telescopes?
It's ok you can go ahead and buy yourself one then. Im ok with that

I am aware cameras are expensive but you can do a lot more with them you cant do very much with binoculars.

For that kind of money you can just pay someone to bring everything you want to look at closer to you.
Careful now, that could be dangerous in the case of, say, a white rhino.

But your point is valid, you can get closer far safer if you are on horseback.

It's the physical glass that's typically the most expensive. In that light, the binoc prices make sense

Once again, it depends. Between R1200 and R1,200,000,000.

About 12 years ago, I bought my son a telescope. My goals were for him to have some fun, and learn something at the same time. I settled on an Orion GoScope 1, small and lightweight for camping / hiking, the original 70mm Reflector. At the time, I was sorely tempted to spend a lot more cash on a computerised one, and bigger = better, but I am glad that I didn't. We had a lot of fun with it, and he still uses it today, albeit occasionally. We both learnt a lot, even more due to it not having a computer.

So yeah, it depends on objectives and priorities. Looking back, I cannot see us having more fun, or even gaining more knowledge had I spent double, triple or quadruple the amount that I did.

Well said. Personally, I think that many people are overspending. Just like everyone has a use case, equipment has use cases too. Only you can determine what best suits your use case. People don’t know how to solve their own problems. I have been there many times, I still overspend on audio gear that I don't need.

When it comes to observing or gazing, I still like to draw what I see, but I am a hobbyist. It is not leisure, neither is it work. All I want to do is learn, but I am not pushed to the point where I want it to advance into a science where computation could assist. For now, I will keep to scribble, it helps me to expand my thoughts. It has been a while though. Need to go to the Karoo again.

All valid, I'll never forget the first time I saw Jupiter on one of those bid or buy specials. The learning aspect as you say will be entirely different depending on your gear and your goals. For some a tripod will be good enough for others an EQ mount may be essential. This is besides the point though. Compare the price for high end binoculars to high end cameras to high end telescopes. It's orders of magnitude different.

I've been itching to do some narrowband astrophotography. When you throw in a scope, mount, camera, filters and all the ancillaries, my kidneys start to shudder.

Tankwa is especially good for stargazing! Have had some amazing nights there. I've never seen our galactic neighbors clearer with the naked eye
It looks good, needs doing even if only for the succulents and birdlife.
