Hi there,

I am currently on MTN pay as you go, spending about 100 bucks a month for my cellphone usage. I Will soon be getting my hands on a Nexus 4, so I'm thinking about "upgrading?" to a contract with a bit of included data.

Want to know if there are any decent bring-your-own-phone contracts available. Something in the R100-R150 a month sort of range would be ideal. I would prefer MTN as their network works well in my area, but I'm open to change if there is a good deal available.

Was also considering just taking out one of the the iphone/galaxy/lumia contracts and selling the phone, but not too keen to go that route.

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

"Bring your own phone" on MTN Anytime 100 is R69/month. Gives you R100 airtime and 25 SMSs. Anytime 200 used to be R99/month.

As far as I know, MTN bring your own contracts do not include data. So if you get a bring your own you will get airtime and SMS, and will need to subscribe to a monthly data bundle.

You could also take out a bring your own data contract, not sure if you can make phone calls on those though. It is something to consider as their data packages now have a bring your own option, which is new.

Check out: http://www.mtnblog.co.za/mtn-reduces-internet-bundles-and-packages/

Prices quoted:
"Alternatively, if you have your own device (modem, dongle, router or tablet) you can bring your device, and treat yourself to a SIM-only Internet package.

Bring your own device
500 MB R39.00
1 GB R69.00
2 GB R99.00"

Be aware also that these are not topup prices

Agreed. Firstly do your homework are your friends/family on VC, M,CC,VM,8ta go check www.porting.co.za/PublicWebsite maybe port your number over to VC and make use of Vodacom free4show, R1,20 per call and if you phone someone on the Vodacom network the first 3minutes and charged thereafter enjoy 57minutes for free, also add a data bundle R1499 once-off for the year includes 2gig data per month x 12 or 1gb x 12month. http://www.vtime.co.za/index.php/pay-upfront-and-get-data-every-30-days-for-a-year don't jump the gun first shop around.

Thanks guys,

Im sticking with MTN for now because my most of my friends and family are MTN and the discounts are decentish.
Went to the MTN store and the guys tells me that they dont do sim only contracts, couldnt find anthing on their website either
Autopage and Nashua also dont offer these kind of contracts.

Only reason I really wanted to go contract was because data can be pretty pricey. But I had a look at the data bundles for pay as you go and its not too bad. R289/1GB which hopefully will last me 2-3 months. Normally use about 50-60 bucks on calls/sms's a month so its just about in my price range for now. But I suppose it comes down to how much of data I use. Will see how it goes

I doubt u can use the 1 gb I over 3 months. I think the max carryover for unused data is 2 months.

I used to work for MTN and myself had 2 of these bring your own contracts. The guys in the store maybe did not know about it, but MTN does sell these.

I hope you are happy on the package you took.

I'm currently on a MTN Anytime 100 Top Up contract. It expires on the 13th of April. I will be downgrading to prepaid. I also bought the Nexus 4 a few weeks back!

Here's why you shouldn't get the MTN contract:
R2.30 per minute per second billing. Which means that if you use your entire monthly allocation on calls, you will only get 43min29sec of talk time.

Compare this to MTN's new prepaid plan, R1.20 per minute per second billing. You will only pay R52.17 for the same talk time of 43min29sec.

And the other plus for the prepaid option is that there's no in-bundle and out-of-bundle rates. It's always R1.20 per minute. The contract will have an in-bundle rate of R2.30 and an out-of-bundle rate of R2.80.
