I am emigrating to Cape Town in February... but I have NO idea what is the most cost effective way to get a decent WoW connection (I play on the EU servers).

Should I go fixed-line ADSL or 3G? Or that i-burst thing? Does their latency vary much?

And are they capped/uncapped?

And, lastly... what's this about 'shaped' and 'unshaped' accounts? We don't get those in the UK, but I'm told they can effect WoW play a lot.

Any advice appreciated. Thanks!

Unshaped adsl from Web Africa.

All inclusive package: http://www.webafrica.co.za/adsl/complete_unshaped/

In South Africa you need to purchase a phone and pay a monthly rental fee for the ADSL line. The complete bundle includes the monthly ADSL rental.

For just purchasing bandwidth, your prices can be found here: http://www.webafrica.co.za/adsl/unshaped/

Sweet! Thanks! So basically I can either get:

Telkom line + WebAfrica bundle (WebAfrica ADSL + WebAfrica Bandwidth)

or

Telkom line + Telkom ADSL + WebAfrica Bandwidth?

And in the UK my ADSL line is 8Mb... heh... I think I need to downgrade :) Do you reckon 384Kb would handle two WoW connections at once? (my missus also plays)

Many thanks for your excellent advice.

Please do note that installing a telkom line can take several months/years.

good luck. :D

Grief. Now you're scaring me! We'll be renting - but I suppose we still have to have someone come and switch the line on or something?

Yup, 2 peeps on a 384 ADSL line is no problem.
You may have to get used to the 1/2 second delay with the speech though.
And ... battlegrounds ... forgetabout it ... your enemy will wack you 2x before you even see he's there.

good luck with Hellkom. you are gonna need it :D

As I understand it, I don't have a choice though, do I?

there is that Neotel crowd, but im not sure they are providing services to the public yet.

If you look at the various threads, you will see people asking about connecting through GPRS. That says it all, im afraid.

Once you are connected, its not too bad though. I never had major issues while connected, but I know people who did.

Just out of interest, what is your Latency there in Brit??

Compared to many other online games, it's not that great actually, because the EU WoW servers are in France. I get a ping of around 80-100ms usually. The other game I play is CounterStrike (and Enemy Territory) and the pings to UK-based servers are generally around 30-40ms.

Still, 100ms isn't shabby I guess!

Mine varies from 120 to 150. Im on Sky Broadband which is a £5 addon to my satellite. I had Plusnet for £20 for 6 months and my latency never went higher than 120. Some blokes on Virgin cable get 80ms. You basically get what you pay for. For cheap you can get by, or fork out some cash and get really good latency. Not worth it for WoW, I think.

I prefer the quest "[62D]LFG new guild if you talk to Domo" ;D

You can pay through your nose hear you still ain't getting less than 250ms for a few minutes on a good day when Jupiter alines with Mars and there is a solar eclipse.
