Hi there. I have a friend. Is she able to get a British passport through her mom. Her mom was British. Any info will be helpful

Depends mostly on her age.

OK thanks. I got one through my mom. How can I find out. Do I have to call the British Consulate or something. If so what is the number, if any of you have it?

As Bwana said, it depends on age. Also, my mother is British, but was born in S.A. No passport for me, only ancestral visa through my grandfather.

You ask her how old she is?

If her mom was born in the UK, yes she can and there is no need for her to be in th UK. Otherwise, as far as I know she cannot get one as she would need to be in the UK and apply for perminant residence before the age of 18. That is what I had to do as my father has a British passport, lives in England but wasn't born there.

Best would be to contact Breytenbach attorneys in Pretoria as they deal with this everyday and they know all the permutations.

Yep, she should be able to. My hub is British so afaik, my children and I all qualify. A friends mother recently got her passport at the age of 60 odd using her mothers birth certificate..was a fairly painless process but took months.

From what I can tell, she had to apply for british citizenship with her moms birth certificate, was granted, went for a 'swearing in ceremony' and then applied for the passport and then left on a one way ticket. :) HTH.

No, unfortunately you don't automatically qualify and, depending on the way your husband obtained his then, your children may not either.

Serious? We only just started talking about getting all the passports together so haven't really done any homework as to my qualification but he was born there and came over to sa when he was 20odd so I just assumed we would automatically be able to get our passports too.

nope, I have my British passport, but my wife (South African) doesn't qualify, all she's entitled to is a spousal visa

You will have to move to the uk and apply for permanent residence and you will be eligible after 3 years. Your children will be able to apply provided he was born there using his birth certificate, if he wasn't born there, then they follow the same process as you except it's 5 years. And you actually have to reside in the UK, there strict requirements for this and they would have to do this before the age of 18.

Your kids will, but you won't. You'll need to be resident for a few years first (4 iirc) but to get there you'll need residency which means you'll need to apply through the UK embassy if you are in SA, and your hubby will need to supply proof he can support you. So he'll need a decent paying job to go to or a lot of wonga in the bank.

I went through it 20 years ago with my wife. I'm UK born and came to SA with her as my then girlfriend, but when we wanted to go back, we applied through the UK consulate in CT but they said I hadn't supplied enough proof I could support my her. I needed back up from my family, who are all in the UK and it was such a pain, we just went there kidding on we were on holiday.

Over there she got temporary residency and a year later, permanent. Then another 4 years for her passport.

We're back in SA now though, 3 kiddies later, 2 have UK passports and my youngest will get when we get round to applying.

This is exactly what we had to go through. I have my permanent residency and will soon have my passport.

You now have me thinking my youngest won't qualify for a passport unless we go back, which we have no plans to do. He's 5 now and SA born whereas my older two were born there.

Maybe think about applying now and see what they say. Would be a bit weird if they wouldn't give him one now when the rest of us do.

This has me worried too, I don't mind if it's a hassle for me but I want my kids to have the option when they are finished school to leave if they want to. I don't see how it could be a problem thou as like I said, my friends mom who is 60 just got her first passport...only ever was in the uk once for a brief holiday some years ago...and she had no problems whats so ever, that's why I just assumed we wouldnt either, unless it's an age thing??

Thanks for the info..better start seriously looking into it...also my eldest with my hub is 15 already but he adopted him...my hubs name is on his birth certificate, will this make any difference to his chances? ( also, we got his name on the birth certificate not through ahem, the normal channels)

Ok, if he was born there your kids should be fine, just start the ball rolling ASAP. You'll need to spend a number of years there before you're entitled to citizenship.
