The number of Britons who are religious has declined significantly in the last 30 years and the number of adherents to the established Church of England has halved, a survey revealed on Tuesday.

Just 52 percent of people said they belong to a religion, down from 68 percent in 1983, according to the latest British Social Attitudes survey, which has been conducted every year for the last three decades.

The percentage of people who class themselves as "Church of England/Anglican" has meanwhile fallen from 40 percent in 1983 to just 20 percent last year, the poll of more than 3,000 people found.

The Church of England remains the state religion in England, headed by Queen Elizabeth II.

Adherence to Catholicism has remained broadly stable at nine percent, while the percentage of non-Christians has tripled from two to six percent.

Some 48 percent said they had no religion, compared to 31 percent in 1983.

Easy to explain.

Religion requires some dedication, self-sacrifice and effort from your side. It's not easy to believe.

But a bombardment of natural scientific intellectual material has found a way to satisfy the human probing instinct in our psyche.

And because humans are lazy by nature (follow the path of least resistance) ... they decided to (absolutely) substitute the things that require most effort with that which comes easier.

I can counter that argument with the fact that access to information and general education is getting to the point where the populous is less worried about some invisible man in the sky judging their every move.

But this doesn't counter what I said.

IHMO the church of today is not doing itself any favors, we are really losing the plot sometimes.

Further more I think people of today want God explained and put in a box with a label, which we simply cannot do, some faith is still required.

Lol.

This story seems to pop up every few months. How often do they survey these people? :D

Also, how much is "more than 3000 people?" Not a very large sample.

What is a "religious atheist" ?

One who practices his beliefs in a ritualistic and dogmatic manner.
One who follows a set of writings and authors as his mentors and authorities.
One who rabidly defends his beliefs (or lack of beliefs) in a provocative and aggressive manner.
One who seeks to proselytise others to his own system of belief.

The religious atheist is proactive, evangelistic and outspoken
The non-religious atheist is passive, unbothered, couldn't-care-less, self-satisfied in his own belief system and sees no need to defend his viewpoint (or lack thereof).

It are a troll-bait. Well done on falling for it.

Nah, they won't be. Especially since the rise of latest trend of rejecting 'man-made' religion (as if there's any other kind) in favour of totally being best bros with Jesus.

Oh they're more than just friends. Some of them claim to actually be "in a relationship" with Jesus. It doesn't sound like a healthy relationship if you ask me. Partly because Jesus's dad wouldn't approve but also because there's no communication. Big J loves giving the silent treatment.

.

What are you on about ?

I asked him to clarify his terminology. Which he did. A straightforward request. I may or may not agree with it, but its not really that big a deal. He can whatever opinion he likes :)
