Broadband affordability index

It is however interesting to note that a broadband service in this country only costs R115 per month, well below the cost of most other countries in the world.

 Just the line rental for a 384k line (shouldn't even be classed a broadband) is R152??

R115 per month

"The ‘most expensive’ country listed by Ookla’s Net Index is the Republic of Moldova where a broadband service costs 11.866% of a person’s total income. It is however interesting to note that a broadband service in this country only costs R115 per month, well below the cost of most other countries in the world."

are you trying to play us i wanted broadband at home i dont not need a phone line but i want to have a fixed adsl account and not a wireless one because of that i have to pay for a phone as well so you should be including the phone line rental that you have no option but to get as well

and i do agree gregmcc it is R152 a month just for the adsl never mind the phone line and then your cap as well

Who's the crack-whore who wrote this article? Is the writer even from SA? Please show me the broadband service for R115 a month. Broadband by definition is a service that allows you to browse, play online games, do voip calls, do video conferencing, stream video, etc.. R115 does not even cover the line rental - That's R130 or more. Then we still have access charges (the lion's share) and then the actual data cost to the ISP (the second biggest cost in the equation).

I have a 384kbps connection and That costs me about R350-R400 per month. I can do most of the things listed above, but skype tells me my connection is too slow when I make video calls (although I can still do it albeit jerkily, forget about video conferencing) and most videos from a quality of 360p up have to be cached for several minutes before I can let it play without fear of having caching interruptions while I watch it. A 10 minute 720p video will take about an hour to cache properly.

In most countries I have heard of you pay a small yearly (or monthly, but small) fee for the line rental (I presume to cover the last mile costs) and then you just pay for the data service after that.

R115 for "broadband"?... It's an insult to us the readers. We are actually marginally informed here and this is complete and utter BS!

The R115 is in the Republic of Moldova, not South Africa. The cost they used in South Africa is R400 per month.

RTFA please, you need to look at the bottom of the article for SA not Moldova.

OMG oops. When the writer said 'in "this" country' I assumed they meant SA. It should say "in "that" country"

[edit] Still... My comments about the definition of broadband is still valid. What is the cheapest connection in South Africa that would actually qualify as "broadband". Although any line faster than 256kbps is lazily referred to as broadband throughout the world; The International Telecommunications Union of which SA is a member defines broadband as between 1.5 and 2 mbps at least. The FCC in the US deems 4mbps as a minimum (but that is them - good for them)

So SA should either leave the ITU or this article should state that the minimum cost of broadband in SA is whatever the minimum cost for 2mbps is. I don't think we have 1.5mbps connections as such.

And don't forget that our networks are congested in general with contention ratios that Telkom refused to publish even when ICASA ordered them to. So broadband becomes even less assured, even if you subscribe to to a line in excess of 2mbps, because there is a greater chance that much of the bandwidth on the line will be used by somebody else at any given time.

even so ABCpt
if you would include for like the UK what is the min cap you get there something like 50GB's and more than likely that they are costing it on uncapped its just a joke here they would be including how much of a cap for it to R400 1 or 2 GB what can you do with that ?
and if it was for uncapped then its almost R600 on a basic adsl package here in south africa

So they left a whole continent out of their little study?

Nobody cares about Africa. Even if we do have low penetration levels, we're in a 'mixed economy.' If you take penetration levels of tax payers, for example, we'd fare much better. TBH, I'm not too worried about the rural subsistence farmer not having 'been having it'.

writer is on drugs i say.

The average salary in Moldova constituted 2748.4 lei or +-R5868.46 or +-$860 -
