Hi,

I am interested in starting a local broadband service in my area. I was hoping that some here would know a little about the industry to help me get started. I have a little knowledge on how to set networks up because of my job and I own a web hosting company so I know my way around a server. My question is about gaining access to towers and getting started.

How do I gain access to towers? Who do I call? What are the costs associated with this business?

My financials are in good shape and I have an investment partner to get me started. I basically want any bit of information I can get and would love any criticism I can get on the business.

Thanks in advance for any help.

You go to the owner of the tower & ask to put up an antenna. Then he either tells you to gtfo or he negotiates a month price with you.

I think there are more than enough WISPs out there already though...most of them pretty crappy as far as I can tell. Plus you'd be competing against Vodacom, MTN, CellC and Neotel.

But don't let me stop you: Go for it if you believe in your idea.

If you want to start a WISP, first thing you need is to apply for a license from ICASA. Get ready to be butt-probed, as ICASA license fees are ridiculously expensive.

The broadband infrastructure is all around us (well mostly) , its just the powers that be that keep it from reaching everyone at affordable rates.

Unless you in government then i can't see your idea working out.

BTW, which area are you trying to get this started, as i am sure there is some form of access to the internet surely?

I am starting it in the US Tennessee.

I am not real sure how to get started but money is no issue. Thanks for the above comments. I will do more research and I plan to hire someone who knows more about all of this as I learn.

Thank you,
Jonathan
