Can anybody tell me what happened to the big hype of broadband over powerlines?

Eskom had trouble providing electricity over the powerlines... So they decided to rather not try to screw up another technology... :D

... was and still is vapourware. Goal have implemented it in a few complexes, but it is not a viable technology for nationwide distribution. I doubt we will ever see it as a major player. Was a big disappointment for all the hype.

why the disappointment?

because it was announced around 2000, maybe even earlier... and to date there is no viable citywide or nationwide implementation... anywhere in the world! You can find "providers" ... but all of them seem to be focusing on small-scale installations.

There are also major technological hurdles, like the need for routers every kilometer on the electrical grid...

Check out the Wikipedia Article...

There are also major problems with radio interference from this technology.

I remember an article on this very forum where we were told we would be "surfing at 90 Mbps" within a few years.

let me see if I can find it...

Seems like a whole lot of Buzz with out the Amplementation

that's what I mean... it's been going on for years... since it was announced. And every few years somebody pops up and makes this amazing claim and then disappears again for a few more years.

In fact, I remember talking to a friend about this a year or two before ADSL went live, and based on the hype at that stage we boasted that Telkom would come to the broadband party late because this technology would undercut them by a few years.

Well... here we are! :p

Like always we can only dream of all this becoming a reality

I would love that... but they gonna have to solve a few problems first. Meanwhile other wireless technologies (like Wimax, CDMA and HSDPA) and advances in ADSL are quickly making the need for this alternative redundant. :(
