Hi all,

I need some advice. I have just recently moved into a complex in Sunninghill called "The Kanyin".
I am looking for someone who lives there or who can assist me with an advice on what broadband solution is available in the complex.

I have spoken to Telkom and they have told me that they do have lines into the complex but no ADSL, as it is not viable. How that is possible since there are over 500 units in the complex I don’t know, or even if what they are telling me is true.

Any advise or assistance would be appreciated. :D

My sister lives there and she uses Vodacom 3G. No complaints regarding signal etc...but I have noticed from visiting there that it is a very big complex and some unit buildings are higher than others. She lives on a top unit so not sure what the lower units are like with Vodacom3G

Hey man, I live across the KFC there in Sunninghill, must say that ADSL took a whopping 2 days to install/everything, so you might as well book an install :D

Tomas,

I also live in The Kanyin. Telkom have pulled lines just to the left of the 1st water feature as you enter & some people right at the bottom (on the border) of the complex have lines. I have asked over & over & I get the same bull**** story.

Quinton (ex care-taker) used to ask Telkom, I used to call them & we got no other response from them. I live on the ground floor & Vodacom had to cancel my 3G contract as I got no signal at all. If you are on the top floor then you can but with their ridiculous 3G prices I would not even go that route, not again anyway. I went the iBurst Wireless route & I can download between 15 - 95kb/s. I would say it averages at about 35 - 45 most of the time. Not cool at all for gaming but for home internet its okay I guess.

I am not too sure about the Telkom 3G signal in the area either. I was actually wanting to call Lumic & find out from them who on the body corporate could help with this matter, cos as you say, its a huge complex & has more than 500 units in. Just shows you how stupid Telkom is, not making money where they could.

You can always check what kind of signal you get for 3G if you have a 3G phone. If you get good signal with your phone in your unit and are OK with the 3G prices then its up to you.

Unfortunately we live on the bottom floor and the 3G signal, well lets say does not exist as I only get GPRS plus the data costs are totally outrageous, but that is a topic for another thread.

In terms of I-Burst, I have not explored this option, I guess past experiences with this company did not impress me at all, but than I had other options, so feedback and any other suggestions are most appreciated and welcomed.

Its the Body Corporate's fault, petition them to get Telkom to resolve this.

wtf weird, Shimbali Sands here, we had awesome service from Telkom, ADSL attenuation is great... is the Kanian a poor complex or something? :P

Maybe Neotel? Have you checked the map on Neotel's site for coverage in the area?

Hey guys i'm in the kanyin, on the 3rd floor double storey unit and i've been using iburst for the last 3 years there, April 2007. And i've have incredible reception there, almost constantly at 900k and my download speeds are approximatel 120kbps. If you are at the bottom i suggest you get an antenna and install it on the roof of the block (discreetly of course).
And an update on the telkom issue, the latest response i got from them with regards to ADSL is that the project they were running to increase the ports has be shelved for this financial year and they are not sure when it will start up again. So i wouldn't hold my breath about that.

ADSL is going to be a problem, we have our Joburg office in Sunninghill and have been trying to get 10 adsl lines installed for video conferencing for 6 months. According to telkom, the DSLAM is full and there is no more back haul capacity but upgrades are "underway", but will hopefully be completed sometime this year. There is also no neotel fibre in the streets yet.

Sorry to dig up old threads but I wanted to know if you guys saw the A4 pages on the guardhouse. Telkom are doing a survey on who needs voice access or data access lines. There is an e-mail address on the page that you need to send some info too.

Please spread the word & tell your friends & ALL those around you. Why they don't put an A5 page under each door is beyond me.

Thanks & lets hope we get this right. I can then finally take my iBurst Modem & watch it burn in my fireplace.

Ye D3x i saw the notice at the gate. Fortunately for me i don't have to stress about this anymore, as i've just sold my unit and am moving to wendywood where i know they have ADSL ... wohoo.
And good luck to all you guys.
