Hi there, I'm considering getting a pigtail from Broadband Zone and hooking it up to either a Pringles or coffee can - I was just wondering if anyone has had much success with this method? Also, if anyone knows where I can pick up the component parts for the pigtail (the co-ax and N2 female connector) more cheaply than Broadband Zone, that would be a great help. I've got 1 light of signal on my modem, I maintain a constant connection, but the speed fluctuates wildly from 28kbps down to about 6kbps... Will better signal strength improve this, by helping keep the error rate low?

thanks in advance!

Zefrem23,

Don't go to BBZ you'll pay through the nose!
Go to Poynting straight, ask for Louis address is
33 Thora Cresent, Wynberg. Tel. 262 5155 - phone first.
Can't help with cantenna as I got a dish.
Speeds are shocking these days - I'm getting 56k "Dail up"
speed with a 512k connection. I HATE IT. Sentech is starting to suck
just like Telkom.

The connector is a very finicky thing. The ones Webb Industries supply is essentially a "hacked" MCX connector. If BBZ sells the proper thing (read: it makes a solid connection) it might be worthwhile going for theirs rather.

I didn't know they sell pigtails loose? What is their price on these things?

Also, a pringles can isn't the best if you're going to be making a proper cantenna. Look for the 750g Ricoffy cans, or something that size. The N-male and N-female chassis mount connectors can be obtained from Webb, or Poyinting.

Check http://rodent.za.net/gallery/cantenna to see what one looks like.

Is there any specific reason why the N-connector needs to be used rather than, say, a hacked BNC connector? I'm completely new to this sort of thing, so I'm just asking out of curiosity more than anything else. For the meantime, I crunched away a whole tin of Pringles (Salt 'n' Vinegar - the *only* flavour worth the effort :) and sommer stuck it over the modem's antenna - whaddayaknow, 9% more signal.

An aside - I want to put a hub in, so I have the following setup:

Modem -> Ethernet cable -> Hub -> Flylead -> PC - I have tried this out but have had no luck, even after installing the ethernet drivers from the MyWireless disk. The green light on the custom ethernet cable doesn't come on - should it come on when connected, or only when traffic is moving? Need help here please! :)

Thanks again!
