South African analogue TV switch-off warning

The SOS: Support Public Broadcasting Coalition has warned that switching off remaining analogue TV signals could spell disaster for the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) and other free-to-air broadcasters.

Speaking to 702, SOS Coalition national coordinator Uyanda Siyotula said the public broadcaster lost roughly 40% of its audience after switching off analogue TV signals in five of South Africa's provinces.

I cant even recall, that any stated owned project has ever been on time, under budget and without any back hand dealings...

Why would this be any different...

Wonder if we will have a celebration on 17 June 2025 for the 10-year anniversary of missing the ITU deadline. We all could use a public holiday to commemorate this revolutionary achievement.

What makes a TV unit? Its a unit that receives a broadcast signal.

In the past SABC would want you to take your tv unit to a shop to remove the receiver. Now you simply wont receive the signal at all.

So thus, TV license cancelled.

Ironic that these were your requirements to keep receiving a signal from the SABC....

  1. A South African identity document.
  2. Proof of address.
  3. An affidavit to confirm that the family has a working television set.
  4. A bank statement or affidavit to confirm that the family income is R3500 per month or less. If you receive a SASSA grant, you do not need to bring proof of income. Proof that you receive a SASSA grant is enough.
No where does it state that you actually need a valid SABC tv license to receive a set top box for SABC digital signal.

If you earned more than R3500 per month, you would have to buy your own set top box to receive their digital signal. Otherwise you would not be able to receive any tv signal.
