I've got a RROD xbox that I'm not sure what to do with.. It's from 2006 with the original mobo (no hdmi).

Powercare want R1100 to replace it. I see both musica and incredible were selling arcade systems for R999 so that makes me wonder if I should even bother with powercare.. Why pay more for a refurb, with a few months guarantee, when I can get a new console for less? I already have a HDD and wireless controller.

Should I try open it up and and replace the thermal paste? Or try the penny trick? Has anyone here tried it...

Thanks

My advice is to open it up, you got nothing to lose trying to repair it.
When opening it just take a look at the X-clamp add new bolts and add new thermal paste to the CPU and GPU.
My friend did that and it worked his CPU overheated and the X-Clamp bent separating from the mobo.

Buy the Musica one and try the to fix it.

Would love to but they don't have stock.. Neither does incredible. Was merely pointing out that It seems possible to get one for less than powercare..

@Louis72 thanks for the advice. Did your friend use coins in addition the the thermal paste and also, is it a permanent fix? As opposed to the towel trick..

I had a RROD and fixed it.

Open up, remove the main Heat-sink, replace the ****ty clips with machine screws and nylon washers, replace paste, and screw on nice and toit. (I used a heat gun too).

Worked for me.

there is a company in jhb, that apparently re-flow's the gpu, BUT, they wont touch it if you have opened it to do the clamp fix

I've fixed many a RROD for myself and friends, all you gotta do is follow the tutorials online until you find one that works...Eventually you'll get it :)
