Brown tourist signs

This is quite a random question, but I'm sure you have all seen those brown tourist information signs on roads and freeways indicating lodges, guest houses etc.

These must obviously be put up by the local City council or municipality. Does the establishment apply to the municipality to have a sign erected? And if so do they pay for it themselves, or does the local municipality?

I'm not sure who puts it up but you need to get permission for it and pay for it. It also has to conform to certain standards.

You pay for it each year afaik. The municipality will put it up.
