Hi,

Looking for some advice. I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this question.

I am having continual internet access issues at my apartment. I thought it had to do with either the ISP of the phone line. I downloaded a network uptime tracker, and it seems to be up all the time. It is giving 100% uptime.

So next time I had issues with the browser I jumped onto the cmd.exe and tried to ping local and international sites. Both came back 100%. No problem whatsoever.

Does anyone have any advice about what I can check next? It is really frustrating.

I think it might have something to do with my router set-up. I have posted those at http://www.razorpms.co.za/uploads/Screenshot.jpg.

FYI - I am on Telkom ADSL 4MB line, and using Afrihost as my ISP. Router is a LinkSys WAG54GS. Both machines connecting to the router are experiencing issues (1 x windows, 1 x mac).

Would really appreciate any advice.

Thanks!

Richard

Your setup is wrong. Remove all the portforwards, and ensure that you are not blocking any incoming data.

By default the router should be blocking any incoming requests which haven't originated from within your network.

Portforwarding

Why would port forwarding be causing this issue ?

My guess is that it could be related to a transparent proxy somewhere along the line ?

the port forwards would not cause the issue, return traffic would not be on common ports, rather the high ports.

u can ping...so try dns?
use a different external dns server and see if u have the same issues

DNS

I agree, DNS can be part of the problem.

However, if you are pinging the name and not the IP and it replies, it means that the DNS is working so then this rules this error out as well.

You can try OpenDNS:

Primary: 208.67.222.222
Secondary: 208.67.220.220

Have you checked the MTU yet? When you connect a broadband router to an iBurst modem it does exactly what you're describing till you drop the MTU. It may just be what you're experiencing :)
