Microsoft’s IE has been steadily losing market share to competitors like Mozilla, Safari and Chrome.
But according to Microsoft spokesperson Amy Barzdukas, IE 8 promises to be the “best” and will focus on delivering the best user experience possible.
“We have made IE 8 the best browser for the way people really do use the web,” said Microsoft’s Amy Barzdukas.
These are strong words which will hopefully prove to be true for Microsoft.
Firefox stealing market share
Mozilla Firefox has been creeping up on IE. Research firm Gartner recorded a market share of 21% for Firefox. This is the first time in history that they broke the 20% barrier.
Microsoft’s IE has dropped below 70% for the first time in 8 years to only own 68% of the browser market.
Figures on MyBroadband indicate that just under 30% of our users access the site using Firefox which attests to the growing popularity of the browser.
IE 8 improvements
According to the BBC, IE 8 will offer performance upgrades to speed up page loading, new navigation features and tab isolation so that if you hit a bad site only that tab closes and not the whole browser.
Furthermore, WebSlices will give users a way to keep updated about a particular item on a web page like stock prices, the weather or an eBay auction.
“Accelerators let users access Web services like maps or translations in a small window without having to leave the page,” reported the BBC.
Security has also been beefed up and now includes “InPrivate Filtering”. This functionality allows users to see and block a third-party content provider that might be tracking their activities on the Web in an effort to target advertisements.
