I've registered at Unisa for Bsc with specialisation in Information Technology and Computer Science but am having second thoughts. I feel that I'm studying Bsc just for the piece of paper. I'm thinking about switching to a BCom with specialisation in financial management because the company I work for is in the investment services industry and I don't want to be in IT forever.

What would you do?

Bcom, but CA. Those guys earn plenty, and the CA's i know (auditors at the big 3), dont really work that hard.

Bsc and IT, weekends and plenty overtime dude - sometimes which you dont get paid for.

having a bcom myself, its a very general degree and you can basically do anything but breaking into the industry you want can be difficult, although throw in some experience and a few courses specialising in your industry and you're on your bicycle, why not grab a few courses from the commerce school, I had a mate who did a BSC IT and he threw in some eco's modules for good measure, do some research, you should be able to major in say comp sci and finance but still have a Bsc.

edit: and becoming a CA is not easy work, but once you get there it is the easy life

edit 2: BSC IT is not going to teach you the technical aspects of the IT industry, if you want technical go do tech, you'll be taught to develop solutions

Who are the big3 u talk about ? my brother is with one of the big4 and he does quite a bit of overtime :)

In response to the question, in my opinion, do a bcom unless IT is something you really enjoy and you can see yourself doing it for years.

I also started with a bsc it and after the first year i realised this wasn't what i wanted to do and changed over to a bcom accounting, im in my honours year now.. quite hectic but its doable :)

Well I'm currently in my 3rd year of B.Sc Computer Science and I also do Information Systems 3. I will still be graduating with a B.SC as we are allowed to take Information Systems as an elective. I think this is perfect because Computer Science gives you a technical aspect (maths, algorithms, programming and the general technical side) while IS gives you a view from a business perspective.

Hi Darkdenim

I have both a BSc Eng and BCom and I can honestly say that in these matters you have to go with you gut.

If you are after money a BCom can take you places. It is a rough road though.

In my line of work, both degrees have proved to be immensely useful. A BCom with specialisation in financial management can open many doors.

good choice, i wish i had done the financial management route :) You only realise what your interests really are when u start studying, but finance is fun and enjoyable. Although accounting is worth it and tough, it can get a tad boring at times.

This is the most truth I have ever read on this here forum.

I myself started at the bottom of the chain at my current employer. Sure I climb the ranks allot quicker than the others based on my studies. But I wanted to be in the comapny I am now and I'm almost at the place where I will be using my Degree for the fisrt time in my life :D And yes, I'm 28, 29 tomorrow :p

Lol. My girlfriend is doing her articles, and so are most of her friends. They all work ridiculous hours and have lots of stress.

I did BSc IT and work 8 hours a day then go home and relax. I know that when the gf qualifies with CA she will earn a lot more than I am :(

If you like Finance, try looking at BBus (Bachelor of Business Science)
its a best of both worlds (management and science)

plus, you can be en-route to become a CFA...which is worth alot more than a CA imo

:)

haha angelik.. I won't lie, 3rd year is quite a jump from 2nd year.. wait till u get to honours.. We literally do in 1 lecture what you do in 5 lectures in 3rd year.. It's no more playing games

and in terms of articles, its alot of hard work, U work alot of overtime.. my brother is doing his articles at kpmg, just the other week he spent everyday working untill 9:30pm, 4 and a half hours over time a day, 22 hrs a week.. not pretty :)
