Ok, I have tried and tested this on many occasions, and I get the
same results... I have Windows XP and a FreeBSD machine, 192k
ADSL. For some reason I get faster download speeds in FreeBSD than
in Windows? Can anyone tell me why?

Test was a local file, one after the other... the results were consistent.
Windows did between 18-19kb/s and then freebsd would do 31-35kb/s.
Can anyone explain this please? :/

Think the beast is using some sort of protocol that limits windows users to 20kB/s? Any linux users experiencing the recent speed decreases? If thats the case then I'm sure there should be a way to bypass it.

What about difference in programs used and other processes on the PC i.e. windows has more apps running so its slowing down the "processing" of the download?

The question I have is what affects downloading? Can it just be line speed or are there are other factors.

I don't think that Telkom will limit Windows users......alhough they are Telkom....

Background apps and processes don't play much part in download speed unless you are using something like 98-100% of your system resources which is very rare. But the question you have to ask is how is it that almost everyone on 192 is now limited to 20kB/s. Therefore it's definitely nothing wrong on the client side.

The fact that pppoe is being used and u still getting different speed is bizarre. Does the actualy time taken to download a file reflect 35kb/s? If so, it has to be something with windows

Might it have something to do with my ppp configuration in FreeBSD?
Here it is:

# /etc/ppp/ppp.conf

default:
set log Phase Chat LCP IPCP CCP tun command
nat enable yes
nat same_ports yes
nat use_sockets yes

pppoe:
set device PPPoE:rl0
set mru 1492
set mtu 1492
set speed sync
enable lqr
set cd 5
set dial
set login
set timeout 0
set authname ********@*********.***
set authkey *******
set ifaddr 10.0.0.1/0 10.0.0.2/0 255.255.255.0 0.0.0.0
add default HISADDR
enable dns
# end of ppp configuration

its probably just the overheads of the OS making the difference. windows is prolly pumping out netbios requests, windows updates, telling microsoft what all you have installed etc, fbsd is doing what you tell it to.

There's no ways that could swallow 12-15kb/s. If that was a case your cap would be gone before you could blink. (10kb/s is approximately 40mb an hour, work it out for yourself.)

But FreeBSD might well be using a different means to download the file, and thus gaining a more favourable standing in Telkom's heinous heinous heinous packet shaping system.

No its your download / torrents program, its all about the PORTS & CACHE! Hence I route all my traffic through FreeBSD 6.x. No bloody Windows 24 hour timeouts when PPPoE overing windows and a build in Firewall.

But even if I let my router's modem handle the connection directly,
it still sits at 20kb/s max ! Whats going on :<
