Just formatted the HDD and trying to install WinXP Pro.

Code:
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

<snip blah blah blah blah>

*** STOP:0x0000000a (0xf000ef73, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x8084cd0c)

Any ideas?

Sata / IDE BIOS thing?

Strange you should mention it as I went into the bios just after posting and disabled the SATA ports as they are not being used. Busy doing a full format now and will see how the install goes from there.

Usually running a memtest over it finds something. If yes then its mem/cpu/mobo.

I'm not inclined to think HDD, but maybe kilo knows something I don't.

Hmmmmm....

You installing XP with SP1 or SP2... or just XP ?

I get that BSOD error with XP install without SP on newer hardware. Slipstreaming service packs sorts it out.

Either that or memory... or VGA... ??

Looks like memory errors. Let me test one dimm at a time and see which one is fooked.

/Prays it's not the 512MB one as the pc only has 768MB ram....

XP Pro with slipstreamed SP2 and this is on really old hardware, socket 478!!!

Uses onboard SiS video chipset.

Eish... hopefully not STD DIMM or DDR266.

I've got the 512MB out while testing the 256MB.

Transcend
512MB 184P DDR=CP
512MB DDR333 DIMM2.5-3-3
78542 Y0337 QC:A5

If it's busted then I'm fooked as I do not have any more working ones, I already gave this one away last year to the lady and it's been working fine up till last friday.

Eish !

I can scrounge around here, but I suspect I have either given away or turfed the old stuff.

Ok the 512MB stick is faulty, I'm fooked.

maybe try the old rubber/erases on the contacts trick...?

How old is old... my old PC gave up the ghost a while back, I might have a few, need to check what they are... PC is around 8 years old

Can't you just throw some DDR400 in there...those should be plentiful still. Is the 333 a different size?

The failed stick was DDR400, the 256MB one is 333. Same size and they worked fine together before.

I found another 512MB stick which as far as I'm aware should be working (I mark all the faulty ones I have) but the PC simply won't post with it installed. I know this MB is finicky with RAM and have several settings in BIOS where it is set to 'by SPD' which is the auto settings but it also has timining and latency settings.

The other stick I found is

Elixer
M2U51264DS8HC3G-5T
512MB DDR-400MHz-CL3
PC3200U-30330

Yeah tried the eraser thing as well as some alcohol & cotton bud on the contacts.

It's a 3.0GHz P4 Socket 478 which is either a Northwood or Prescott based CPU. This is the motherboard, http://www.msi.com/product/mb/661FM2-V-LSR---ILSR.html#/?div=Detail
