Hi Guys

I am looking for some advice if possible.

After school I studied for a 2 year diploma in networking/sysadmin and I am a MCITP: Enterprise Administrator.

My current job is being a server management engineer for an outsourcing company in London (we have a remote office in CPT)

I have saved up some cash and was looking to invest in furthering my career so I was thinking of studying a degree at UNISA.

The degree I am looking at is the BTECH Information Techonology Degree.

You first need to finish a diploma and then if you average 60% for your last year you can apply to do your degree and after this you also have the oppurtunity to do a masters.

Have any of you guys perhaps studied this?

I know my servers and networking really well as well as my command prompt and basic scripting but not programming.

Any comments/advice?

Thank you!

One thing my dad always told me was that no one can take education away from you. id say go for it!it can only do you good.maby take a day and go talk to unisa and find out what it entails,if you need to do a bridging program, etc.

Thanks

Thanks guys! Do you just visit the Unisa office in Parow? or do you arrange a meeting?

I have never dealt with them before?

Cheers

Have you got your UNISA student number yet? You only have a few days left (17 September) to get it else you need to wait till next year:

Once you got your number, you then do your normal application end of this year. Would be best to go see someone at Parrow to assist you with your study choice but do phone in advance for an appointment.

All the best and go for it.

Started doing my BTech through UNISA this year. Total of 10 subjects required to complete the course. As I'm full time employed I'm doing 5 subjects this year and 5 next year.

Register now to become a student, don't leave it for the last minute.

So far there hasn't been much programming at all. The subjects. I'm currently doing Research, Development Software IV, Operating Systems IV, Software Design & Engineering and Information Systems.

Pretty boring for the most part. Have got 13 assignments for this year and 4 exams at the end of the year. The cost with textbooks for this year was roughly R15 000.

It's probably a good bargaining point for a better salary in the future. Like someone else said no one can take education away from you.

Get on with in then and good luck!

One Other Thing, make sure they process your application properly. The app department told me I was completed with the registration and everything was fine only to find out 4 months later that they didn't approve me because my academic history wasn't on the official UJ letterhead.

Hi guys,

Just wondering how it's going? Have any of you completed your Btech yet? What projects did you do for PRJ4M1I?

I am planning on enrolling for my Btech next year.

Wow, a revival. Finished my BTech end of 2013.

For the written research project I did the role technology could play in making sure teachers were in class during working hours instead of ****ing around like they always seem to be doing.

For the software dev project I built a robotic arm. Linked this to a laptop and built a server application to control the robotic arm as well as stream a webcam feed to clients. Built separate client applications for PC (C#), mobile (Android), and web (java + java3d) that could connect to the server and control the arm, create and execute predefined sets of movements etc

If you studying part time its best to do the Research in IT in the first year and save the 2 research/project modules for the second year.

I have 2 Software Development Diplomas, one of which is from City & Guilds... I am thinking of doing a BTech next year through Unisa... I am employed full-time so I might not do a lot of subjects in a year... Any advice? And can I get a rough estimate from you guys about how much it costs....

I found the BTech kind of easy. If you have software dev experience you should be able to do it over 2 years. Cost in the region of 15k excl textbooks.

That project sounds awesome!

Thanks. This sounds interesting! and thanks for the tips re: the research modules

Wow that sounds super cool! I'm currently doing Ndip IT @ UJ(1st year) I'm planing on also doing my BTech though. Hopefully I learn how to make robotic arms also Lol.

That's something you'll have to teach yourself unfortunately. NDip etc just equips you with the practical basics, the onus is on you to take what you learn to another level and constantly evolve your skills. Don't think for a second they would teach you anything near as advanced as robotic or electrical engineering in the NDip.

Piece of advice: when I studied my NDip at UJ they had 4 streams to choose from in 2nd year. If you aren't cut out to continue with the Software Dev stream (seems like 98% of the candidates didn't) then just go get a job at the Telkom call center now, you'll save yourself the money and 2 years of time before you wind up there anyway :D Unfortunately it's this mass of idiots that make the real NDip IT look bad.

I went to UNISA for BTech and at least they did one thing right by requiring valid work experience as a prerequisite for registration. This meant all the skills I gathered over the years of working made the BTech extremely easy (in most cases) for me.

Ok I see thanks for the advice, though I'm not sure if they still ask you to choose streams anymore. I have four modules; Development Software, Information Systems, System Software and Business Analysis. What I know is that in second year System Software changes to Communication Networks And I think you have those modules for the rest of the course. I'll try and ask someone tomorrow though.

Hey vampire, I asked and the streams no longer exists, everyone does those same four modules. So does this mean I should apply at telkom now or what? :D
