Bucket system 'Barbaric' : Mchunu

Well now I'm debating whether it makes sense for the state to provide decent toilets and sanitation to the poor / needy.
Garyvdh thinks it's a waste of money.
think it will save us money in the long run plus has many other benefits.
What's your opinion on that topic?

Yeah, I have no issue with it. It's a pretty basic human need and the more people can have access to proper sanitation the better. Just hate it when it becomes a political football, like the ANC did in Cape Town.

I'd hazard a guess that he's more bothered with the general wastage and corruption that's involved in so many things government gets involved in.

We are talking about a vast area where there aren't even tarred roads let alone flush toilets.

A flush toilet is cheap - but the infrastructure to support it isn't.

Any idea of the cost to lay sewage pipes to all these areas ?

Can somebody please point out for me in which other country of the world it is the Government's responsibility to build you a flushing toilet and pay for it?

Who built and paid for the infrastructure that allows for sewage to be piped away from your property ?

Whats the point of building a flushing toilet if there is no infrastructure? Its the infrastructure which is the responsibility of the govt.

Its shameful that some South Africans are more interested in finding excuses to NOT build this infrastructure than trying to solve it. Its almost like its badge of honor that you have a toilet and someone else doesn't.

Do you think the state should build and pay for this infrastructure?
Did you pay for the sewage pipes leading from your property or did the state pay for it?

Everyone else seem to pay their own way through life, so maybe they are poor/needy for a reason.

The state isn't some benevolent creature with a fat wallet that pays for anything. In fact it doesn't pay for squat, it raises money through rates & taxes to facilitate the construction of communial property on it's citizens behalf.

The state doesn't have any money of its own, it takes from someone to give to somebody else. If someone in Khaya gets a toilet, it was because someone else paid for it throught their tax contribution.

The state didn't pay for sewage pipes leading from my property, the money for its construction and maintenance was/is raised through rates & taxes.

Your understanding of how the world works is wrong.

I know that evilstebunny.
Nevertheless, the state pays for things, irrespective of where it got the money to pay for it.

So let me rephrase that then:
Do you think the state should use the money given by taxpayers to build and pay for this infrastructure (sewers) for everyone?
Did you pay directly for the sewage pipes leading from your property or did the state pay for it (using the money given by taxpayers)?

I think you'll find that farm workers deliver all of the fruits!

I pay "sewerage" rates every month to keep that **** going... so essentially I am paying for it - it's just hidden in some government land fee.

The fact of the matter is that it is a challenge to provide a flush toilet to such rural area. It's an easy decision - provide a flush toilet for 10 or less people on rural farms in a year, or for the same cost provide flush toilet for 2000 that are closer to the city?

The State, whether local, provincial or national, should provide the basic infrastructure that will include a feed to/from your property, where the feed will stop about 1m inside the boundary line. The property owner must provide the rest of the reticulation and "flushing toilet" at his/her own cost.

They should blame flush toilets on apartheid and invent something better.

Seven-hundred-and-forty-four convictions were secured in 1024 cases of fraud and corruption from April 2010 to March 2011.
lets see now - that would equate to around 2.8 cases of fraud, every day, every week, every month - and that is only the cases that have been discovered.

"There is a steady decline over the period of three years of fraudulent incidents reported in the province as a result of pro-active and re-active interventions made by the office of the premier, together with the provincial treasury's internal audit unit," he said.

"reported" being the operative word
one cannot help but wonder how many cases were / are not reported for various reasons
