Budget debate goes ahead without Gordhan

The DA had complained in a statement earlier on Wednesday that Gordhan should have put the debate first, and then travelled to the UK and US to drum up investor confidence.

"He had to move swiftly to reassure the ratings agency and investors," said Yunus Carrim, who heads Parliament's portfolio committee on finance.

He lambasted DA MP David Maynier for issuing the statement, saying the party wanted the economy to collapse just so that it could get votes.

Gordhan did the best the best he could in a very limited time after his appointment and then took positive action to shore up support overseas. Sitting in Parliament while listening to all the Zuma lackeys bickering pointlessly with the DA would have been a complete waste of his time.

True the DA is being a bit childish here, but that quote is also tripe, Gordhan should have done much more, perhaps he could not, but that is no longer an acceptable excuse.

He should have pushed through some real reforms to put the commitment to growth beyond doubt in the eyes of investors and ratings agencies, he most certainly did not do that. If he didn't have the backing to do it he should have resigned and plunged us into chaos, which would be a faster solution to true reforms than the current stalemate ...

How do you ''drum'' up investor confidence with a weaking currency, no growth, manufacturing, mining and agricultural sectors all either static or in decline, BBBEE laws unfavorable to everyone except a specific targeted group of people, a largely unsettled social climate with a strike season (that apparently doesent exist), utility issues and associated ''best effort'' type assurances that we will have water and power day to day, security concerns, corruption concerns and a looming downgrade.

He would probably be better off facing the opposition - (not Zuma, the other ones).

Not sure if the reporting it accurate. Maynier spoke to Xolani Gwala on 702 the other day and said they agree Gordhan should be there, but had asked for the debate to be postponed so that he could be here for that, too.
