Hey all

I'm looking to buy a FULL built-to-spec PC. I'm a bit apprehensive of purchasing a PC over the internet, so I will be using LandmarkPC coz it's fairly close to me. Alternatively there is Cafe Viva which is a bit more expensive.

Purpose: PC will be used for design and digital art (I will likely find myself working simultaneously in Photoshop, illustrator and a few other programmes, with High res images), as well as very casual gaming. I'd like to play some FPSs but not a neccessity. I'm also a student so I have a budget of around R8000-R9000.

So here's what I'm looking at:

-Coolermaster USP-100 Black No PSU...............................................R485
-(Appropriate power supply? Corsair CX500W)..........................R570
-Intel DH67BL Intel H67 Chipset M-ATX.............................................R960
-Intel i5-2400 Quad Core 3.1GHz......................................................R1710
-Corsair TW3X4G1333C9 XMS 3 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1333.................R605
-Seagate 1TB 32MB Cache S-ATA2 7200RPM.....................................R530
-LG 22x SATA Black and Beige Bezel .............................................R210
-Samsung B2030 20" LCD 70,000:1 5ms............................................R1215
-Microsoft Comfort Curve 2000 Value Pack Dsp Black..........................R230
-Cables and such???
-Cooling???

Graphics Card from Wootware.co.za:
-Inno3D GeForce GTX460 768MB......................................................R1500

Comes to a total of R8015 not including cables if they don't come with the components, cooling if I need it(?), and shipping the gfx card. I really can't spend more than R9000.

Please let me know of any advise/mistakes/alternatives. thanx

:D ..for the admission of guilt you were apparently hoping no-one would notice.

And a synonym for that is ..wait for it - WARY! You succeeded, like oh so many before you, in falling for the wary/weary trap - 'gratz. And while we're at it, you should consider learning about advice/advise.

Thanx for the awsum english lessin mister, but im more interested in informasion tecknology at the mo...

Admission of guilt?

Erm you are aware there are a mulititude of free OS's out there? Or perhaps his company / school will pay for the OS?

Actually, in real-world terms, there are only very few OSen out there; just a plethora of Linux distributions. But let's go with your take, such naked naïveté really is quite droll to see.

I have to add that the components that you've selected are excellent for your budget! Really well done with the selection :)

That i5 2300 is quite expensive. IIRC, you can get a i5 2400 for R1650 (VAT incl).
You can also get a slightly cheaper motherboard (which simply excludes Firewire & Display port), which will save you like R50 - Intel DH67BL.
You can go for a cheaper power supply, like the Silverstone Strider Essential 500W / Corsair CX500.

You can try to get a copy of Windows & Office via your University's IT dept. Stellenbosch University is still in the process of making those 2 available to students :)

Tell us more. Are they special editions?

You might be able to save some money on the monitor - or get 2 :)
I see Game has a special from the 20-23 Jan Samsung 20inch LED monitor (doesnt say which model) for R999
or you could get a 23 inch for R1499

Hmm wow that's not bad. I'll check out what models those are. If they aren't terrible i'll definately go for the 20" LED:)

I'd reckon that you can get Win 7 Ultimate and Office Enterprise ed. for very cheap (like R180 for Office - but this is just speculation).

I really hope that they come through with this before March, because that is the latest date that I'm still going to be registered.

Dont get the 768mb GTX460. Only the 1gig is worth it. Should still be under 2grand.

Alternatively get another 4gigs of ram.

I had a second look at the processors and it looks like I made a mistake. Landmarkpc offers the i5 2300 for R1,590 and the i5 2400 for R1,710. So i will go for the i5 2400 and if I go overbudget I'll choose the former.
Good point on the motherboard. It's a measily R70 difference, but might as well.
The power supply is the only thing I am absolutely clueless about. I was looking at the Corsair CX500 but I don't want to buy a "cheap" power supply that will cause problems.

There does seem to be some student deals I've seen around. I'll see what my Uni has to offer. Thanks:)

I've read the specs on nVidia's site and seen Arthur's charts on performance vs. price and the GTX460 768mb seems pretty awesome for R1500... If there's something wrong with it then I'm also thinking of the GTS450 1024mb which is slightly cheaper.

And if I can fit it in the budget I think the extra 4gigs of RAM will be a huge help.
