I want to build a budget gaming rig and i wont be overclocking. I was thinking of getting an i3 4130 , an msi h81m-p33 and a r9270 gpu. From wootware cost would be about r4500. Can anyone suggest anything better?

Don't skimp on the CPU. The i3 is a decently capable gaming CPU but most modern and future games will be optimised for 4/8 Cores. On Intels part, 4 cores will be good enough so rather look at an i5. Also, don't buy the cheapest RAM but don't buy the most expensive either. I highly recommend Transcend memory.

Spend at least R600 and go the route fox suggests.
Possibly consider getting an ssd as well.

I do agree with Fox on this, I recently upgraded my own pc to a gaming rig, its all about what you already have and how much you willing to spend in total.

as an example, I already had an I3 and just added ram and Motherboard and GPU to the mix,
got a pretty decent rig without blowing the budget I stuck to,
also I brought mine in parts each month I saved and brought a component;)

yes cant play on full graphics but good enough to enjoy games including crysis 3

Im going to be upgrading again in a year or two which is why I went with the i3 for now. Im sure this build should be able to play most games at decent framerates for a year or so. A decent quad core, the i5 4440, is almost R1000 more than the i3 and I don't think it's worth it atm. My concern is whether the motherboard will last me for two years.

I have 'able' RAM and a Hdd and my 450w PSU will power this system so i'm not going to buy those. I want go be under R5000.

yip then stick with what I did ,

spend the cash on a decent GPU, i3 or i5 CPU
if you already got a PSU and HDD RAM (and casing) your halfway there,

spend it on a barebones stuff like M/B or cooling or GPU
good place to start would be those,

my own rig :

Radeon 6770, 4 gb RAM, I3 CPU.
cost less than R1500, but like I said already had the i3 CPU and RAM
so all I really brought was the GPU, (R800+) M/B (R575+) and PSU 550 W (600+).

got through sybaritic, but definitely worth shopping around,
lots of difference in price if you already know exactly what you want.

Yeh it's 80+ certified. I bought it from matrix, can't remember the brand now.

I would suggest going with an AMD CPU instead. AMD offers more bang for buck IMHO, well maybe that's just becuase I'm a fanboy.

I would go with an AMD quad core that basically the same price as the i3, which is why it doens't make sense going for a dual-core when you can get a quad core for the same price.

EDIT: You can get the FX-6300 (six core processor) for a R100 more than what you plan on spending on the i3.

I think wootware has pretty good prices, for a south african store ofcourse.

I looked at that however
the am3+ motherboards aren't really good pricewise, there are cheaper motherboards but they don't even have usb 3's. I don't want to pay R1500 for a motherboard.

I get that.

How about going with AMD's APU range. I've got the A10 5800k with the ASRock FM2A85X motherboard, which is quite expensive, but you can get this instead. I haven't had any problems with my AMD APU, I play Battlefield on High in 1080p, but then ofcourse I've got a dedicated GPU.

My RAM is only 1333 so i'll have to get faster RAM to run an APU 'speedily'. Also since i'm getting a gpu an APU processor would bottleneck my r9270. Think intel is definitely the way to go.
