I have a requirement from a small business to move theri Accounting server(pastel) to a seperate box..

Currently
- The user requirement are light 1-2 concurrent users.
- SQL Express 2005
- on share P4 server running sbs2003 with about 7 databases.

I was thinking of putting the pastel server on a :
- hp microserver
- windows 2003 standard
- sql express 2012

Is it possible to buy windows 2003 server second hand ? do you guys think it is worth it to try this setup.
Again the budget is really tight.

Basically looking to design a low power windows based server on the cheap..
any recommendations on how you would do it ?

I very much doubt you are going to find an unused second hand copy of Server 2003.

If they only have 1-2 concurrent users currently and are not expecting to grow to over 10 in the next few years why not just use Windows 7/8? Its not going to be a speed demon an a microserver, but give it 8GB RAM and should be ok. Plus you don't have to pay extra for server Antivirus etc.

What about HOME SERVER 2011? Test it and see... Strip the functions that are redundant and amp it with RAM.

I would do it for kicks and see if it works....

Errr... it does, just not Home or Starter editions.
According to website it says only single user or workstation will run on 7 / 8. Server must be Server 2003 or later.

Why not try install on 7 and see if it works.
