Hi there,

Looking to get a decent budget Smart TV for my parents. I saw this on Takealot and am considering getting it - has decent reviews and is a good size as their existing TV is 32 inches: https://www.takealot.com/samsung-32-smart-hd-ready-tv/PLID52092131

If you can recommend any other models under 4k max let me know, if you think this is a good TV I'll get it. Minimum 32 inch, bigger is ok too. This one looks like it has an easy user interface and supports Netflix/Showmax, with two HDMI inputs which is why I wanted to get it. Do you know if it works using Wi-Fi? Assuming it does.

A few basic requirements I'm looking for: must be able to connect to WiFi for streaming, is very easy to use (for my parents), has two HDMI inputs, is able to use Showmax/Netflix.

Thanks for your help!

I have the 40 inch version.. Very good 5 series.. Brilliant picture and sound.. Actually prefer it to my 7 series.. Highly recommended

Do you think it's better to maybe get a standard 32" or 40" TV and then use it with an android Smart TV box? Am considering that too. Got the Ematic TV Box recently and pretty happy with it.

If you guy know any good Smart TVs that use Android, that would be great. It's for my parents and they're already familiar with Android smart TVs so would also make it easier for them to use. Otherwise a decent 32/40 inch TV that I can plug an Andriod Box into...

I would rather buy a smart tv.. Much more convenient and samsung TVs also have the apple tv app which is quite nice

The thing with Samsung and basically all smart TVs is that support is only for 2-3yrs and then it’s diminishing app availability. (You can buy add on cards but cost doesn’t make sense to me to be honest.. I think at that point just by a media device)

So I’d suggest purchased based on screen and visual processing (smoothing, light/room detect, screen tech, refresh rate) and ability to interface with other devices like sound bars, media players etc and their interfacing standards, audio quality etc.

An Apple TV, Android, Gaming box etc seems a smarter choice to use apps on longer term as support for these are typically 3-6+yrs pending cycle and not as limited.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. Choices, choices... I saw Skyworth sounds like a reputable company that just started entering the TV market and I like that they apparently manufacture the TVs here in SA according to one re-sellers site. Samsung is an established brand and my parents have used a Samsung TV for 6 years now and still going strong with no issues. I see the point of the TV apps not being supported too long but I guess a lot of Samsung TVs have a universal app that does get support for a long time? I like that the Android ones have voice assistant which makes it easier for my parents to search, but I like that I know Samsung make decent TVs and are generally reliable quality. If u guys have any decent 32 or 40" TV sets to compare let me know, my budget is around 5,5k max (and it must be a Smart TV for that), 4,5k without smart TV capability. Also saw Hisense had a few models out there.

They’ve been in the market for many many years.

Just recently in SA.

Doubt it’s locally manufactured. That would he HiSense, but not impossible.

Samsung assembles here, but don’t manufacture here.

Skyworth at Makro is right in your price range.

Ah thanks for that info!

These are 3 models I was considering:

i went with the non smart samsung 32 inch and paired it up with mibox for daughters room

I have two mi boxes, one is used by 80 year olds no problems. My smart TV doesn't come close to the mi box.

I suppose if u have a perfectly decent non smart working TV...then it makes sense to just add a Google certified Android box(not to incur more costs) .. If not I would just buy a smart tv from the beginning..

I'm running a standard Samsung 32" TV with a gen1 Chromecast.

I can't see how an actual smart tv would work better for me.

Xcast, Sodaplayer for local casting without using Internet bandwidth.
Using Netflix, Showmax, etc works without a hitch.

TBH I don't use Netflix anymore neither Showmax. DSTv Now works fine and I've got OVHD if I'm in the mood to watch television.

I've had my TV and this setup for years without any major issues.

Thanks for all the input! Appreciate it. Syncing the 32" for them is an option, am tempted to splurge on the 4k 43" Samsung Smart one for them - just cause watching TV together of the few things they can really enjoy together now due to my dad's disability. Think it'll be easy enough to navigate and it'll work ok for Netflix and Showmax.

I ended up getting the Samsung 32" for them - just seemed like overkill with the other options, and this one had good reviews, hope they'll be happy with it. Thanks for all the help and advice!
