Bugatti Chiron

One-off Bugatti Chiron Golden Era is a painstakingly detailed work of art

This, says Bugatti, was the most challenging bespoke commission that the company has ever created.

Commissioned by an unnamed Bugatti collector with a deep passion for Bugatti’s heritage, and particularly its W16 engine, the Chiron Super Sport1 ‘Golden Era’ took two years to create, and necessitated some entirely new techniques.

“Our customers can be incredibly creative and we take great pride in helping them realise what they dream of, but extensive special commissions such as this are exceedingly rare – we usually see no more than one or two creations on this scale each year,” said Achim Anscheidt, the former Bugatti Design Director who was in charge of this project.

“Given the vision and exacting nature for this project – and the fantastical ideation we wanted to realize – ‘Golden Era’ is probably the most demanding piece of tailored personalisation work that my team and I have ever worked on.”

The customer in question said the Chiron Super Sport and its W16 engine were landmarks in the automotive world, and thus Bugatti started looking back through its history to find other landmark moments to celebrate, including those in the early years of Ettore Bugatti, Jean Bugatti and Roland Bugatti.

Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 57 One of One

The Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic, a timeless Jean Bugatti masterpiece now nearly 90 years old, has long captured the imagination of aesthetes and automotive enthusiasts and is still regarded as the most valuable and exclusive automobile in the world. Many of its design features including the bolted fin that runs the length of its body inspired Bugatti's modern design DNA. But this car is not just a reference for Bugatti's design team: one customer wanted to take things a step further, creating her very own tribute to the iconic Atlantic for her first Bugatti car, a Chiron Super Sport. This is how the '57 One of One' became reality.

Twenty years ago, the customer - a lifelong car lover - first saw a Type 57 SC Atlantic. "I remember the day like it was yesterday. I visited the Mullin Automotive Museum at Oxnard, and there it was, one of only three cars that still remain, on a pedestal all by itself. I fell in love with it from the very second I saw it," she said.

A wish for her very own Bugatti came true two decades later, when her husband - a Bugatti owner who shares the same passion and dedication to cars - surprised her for her 70th birthday with a personal invitation from Bugatti to come to Molsheim in France to configure her own Chiron Super Sport. With memories of that trip to Oxnard and a great deal of passion and excitement, she discovered the home of Bugatti for the first time. Jascha Straub, Lead Designer Sur Mesure at Bugatti, was on-hand to introduce her to the extraordinary history of the Château Saint Jean and the brand - the first part of a co-creation journey that would stretch over year.

This rather lovely Chiron Super Sport pays tribute to the Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic

Ordered as a 70th birthday present, this special Chiron will be known as the 57 One of One

Bugatti certainly isn’t shy about delving into its own history books for inspiration when it’s creating one-offs and special editions, so perhaps this latest Chiron Super Sport shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise.

Still pretty special though, isn’t it? As you can tell from the images above, the Chiron Super Sport ‘57 One of One’ celebrates the stunning 1930s Type 57 SC Atlantic, and we’re told it was commissioned by a 70-year-old lady who had been infatuated with the Atlantic ever since seeing it at the Mullin Automotive Museum 20 years ago.

Apparently it was a year-long process customising the Chiron through Bugatti’s Sur Mesure programme, and the result is a Super Sport that’s painted in a special silver-tinted blue colour that matches one of the three remaining Type 57 SC Atlantics. You’ll have noticed the new grille too, which gets polished vertical lines and a thicker central spine.

A Husband Was So Jealous Of His Wife's Bugatti Chiron That He Got His Chiron Repainted To Match

Both of these Chiron Super Sports feature an intricate "Vagues de Lumière" livery

My favorite car that I saw at Monterey Car Week this year was the bright orange Bugatti Chiron Super Sport ‘L’Aura’ (French for “the aura”), a super bespoke build that wears a hand-painted “Vagues de Lumière” livery that mimics the way light falls and reflects on the car’s bodywork. It turns out I wasn’t the only one who fell in love with the car, as the owner’s husband decided to have his own Chiron Super Sport refurbished to match her spec.

Bugatti has offered customers the ability to refinish their Veyrons and Chirons for a few years now, with its design team able to apply new paint schemes and trim finishes, completely re-trim interiors with new colors and materials, and add other accessories and modifications — especially appealing to those who are not the original owners and want something different. But this is the first time a spec has been changed so early into the car’s life, with the husband only having owned his Chiron for a handful of months before sending it back to the factory.
