Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ revealed

Just 30 customer examples of the 300mph record-setting hypercar will be produced

Bugatti has revealed the Chiron Super Sport 300+, a limited-run roadgoing version of its record-breaking hypercar.

Former Le Mans winner and Bugatti test driver Andy Wallace recently used a 'near-production' version of the Super Sport 300+ to set a top speed run of 304.773mph at the Volkswagen Group's Ehra-Lessien test track in Germany. While the run hasn't been recognised by Guinness as a world record, because it was performed in only one direction, Bugatti now claims to make the fastest production vehicle on sale today.

The Super Sport 300+ uses an uprated version of the Chiron's quad-turbocharged 8.0-litre W16 engine to produce 1578bhp - a 100bhp increase. A longer-ratio gearbox has been fitted to reach top speeds of more than 300mph, compared with the Chiron's restricted 261mph; the Super Sport 300+ will also be electronically limited out of the factory, but Bugatti has yet to reveal what its limit will be.

Bugatti test driver ‘jumped’ the record-breaking Chiron at 447 km/h!

Bugatti test driver Andy Wallace says he effectively “jumped” the Chiron prototype during a recent top speed run at Ehra-Lessien in Germany.

In August, the French firm became the first manufacturer to break the 300 mph barrier, with a "near-production" prototype of the Chiron clocking 490,484 km/h. The company has since “withdrawn” from the so-called speed wars.

Wallace told whichcar.com.au the high-performance vehicle caught some air during the record run, with all four wheels leaving the tarmac.

“There is a surface change [on the straight], and I was calling it a ramp and jump, and everyone was wondering why I was calling it that,” Wallace said, according to the Australian publication.

“That was until they looked at the data, and they realised that it actually is a jump. This occurs at 447 km/h on that fast run.

Here’s how the Bugatti Chiron prototype's tyres survived at 490 km/h

Bugatti has revealed that the tyres worn by the Chiron prototype during its recent record-breaking top speed run were “slightly modified”.

In August, the French firm became the first manufacturer to break the 300 mph barrier, with a "near-production" prototype of the Chiron clocking 490,484 km/h at Ehra-Lessien in Germany. The company has since “withdrawn” from the so-called speed wars.

Stefan Ellrott, Bugatti’s head of development, told whichcar.com.au the company worked with tyre supplier Michelin to modify the Pilot Sport Cup 2 rubber in order to ensure it survived such high speeds.

“We had to modify slightly the series tyre of the Chiron. It is still the series tyre, but with an additional layer of carbon-fibre in it,” Ellrott said.

“It is a very close relationship between Michelin and Bugatti, because Michelin is the only supplier of tyres for the Chiron, so we are together,” he told the Australian publication.

Andy Wallace Said The Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ Was Still Accelerating At 490 Km/H

Andy Wallace was the British pilot who was behind the wheel during the recent record-setting run and he recently told Autoblog the special Chiron’s W16 engine wasn’t out of breath at 304.77 mph (490.479 km/h).

“I don’t think that’s the v-max of the car, because it was still accelerating. At that speed, you cover a kilometre about every seven seconds. Then, of course, at the other end you need some distance — not necessarily time, but quite a lot of distance — to get the car down to the right speed for the banking,” Wallace said.

Wallace added that, in hindsight, he might have been able to keep his foot on the throttle for about one more second before hitting the brakes. That wouldn’t have been enough to cross the symbolic 500 km/h (310 mph) threshold, but it would have added about another mile per hour to his record. “We need less drag or a longer road to go faster,” he explained.

Bugatti Chiron Sky View Glass Roof Option Costs Nearly R1 Million

In the middle of 2018, Bugatti told the world and its future Chiron customers that they could add the “Sky View” option to their hypercar for those who want to enjoy sunlight from above.

This consists of two fixed glass panels in the roof of the vehicle, each 65 cm long and 44 cm wide, above the driver’s and passenger’s seats. These panels have a newly developed laminated structure with thin glass and four intermediate layers.

Mr Manny Khoshbin recently gave us an update on what cars he has coming into his garage and one of them is the one-off Hermes Chiron. It is one of the few cars with no visible carbon fibre parts and as you would expect, it has the optional Sky View glass roof. Manny mentions this was a $60,000 (approx. R910k) making it around the same price as a demo BMW M2 Competition.

Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ Build Slot Available For R75 Million

When Bugatti bashed past the 300 mph mark earlier this year in the Chiron Super Sport 300 prototype, we knew it was a preview for a production model and that followed soon after.

Only 30 units of the Chiron Super Sport 300+ will be built so getting your hands on one will be extremely tough as they are all sold out. If you did not get the chance to buy one in the first offering, you have another chance now but you will be paying a hefty premium.

The limited-edition is said to cost around €3.5 million depending on your final spec but Mobile are listing a build slot for one for a cool €4,680,000 (approx. R75 million). To save you doing the maths, that is a premium of €1,180,000 – nearly R20 million.

Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse And Chiron Arrive In South Africa

Social media went into a frenzy yesterday afternoon after pictures and videos started to emerge of a grey Bugatti Veyron and a purple Bugatti Chiron touched down at Cape Town International airport.

A purple and black Chiron and a Grey and orange Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse were the two that arrived yesterday as you will see in the pictures and videos below.

At this stage, we are not completely sure why they are here but it is either a wealthy businessman bringing his toys in to play in Cape Town or a Bugatti road trip or a tour of some sorts in the future.
