Record 304mph Bugatti Chiron makes public debut

“Near production-spec” machine used by Andy Wallace to set hypercar speed record shown at LA motor show

The Bugatti Chiron that set a new production car speed record of 304.773mph has been shown in public for the first time at the Los Angeles motor show.

The Chiron has a limited top speed of 261mph, but the company wanted to find out what the machine was truly capable of without that device. British sportscar veteran, Le Mans winner and official Bugatti tester, Andy Wallace drove to an astounding 304.773mph at the VW Group’s secretive Ehra-Lessien test track in Germany.

Does anyone have an idea if they will be in Cape Town or nearby again? If so, when?

The Average Bugatti Customer Spends R5 Million Just On Options

If you are fortunate enough to be able to afford a Bugatti, chances are you have amassed an enormous wealth considering the Chiron starts from $3 million

While talking to CarBuzz at the LA Auto Show last week, Bugatti President Stephan Winkelmann mentioned that the average amount Bugatti customers spend on options is “300,000 euros. This does not include the base car or taxes.”

Bugatti reveals Chiron Noire with exposed carbon design

The Bugatti Chiron Noire pays tribute to one of four Type 57 CS Atlantics created by Jean Bugatti that went missing at the beginning of World War II. The brand claims that if this particular car were to be discovered, it would likely become the most valuable car in the world.

The colour scheme of this special Chiron can be applied to two trims; the Sportive and the Élégance. On the latter, carbon-fibre covers the enitre body. The redesigned grille gains a solid silver and black enamel badge.

Bugatti Reveal Sinister Chiron Noire Special Edition

Last week Bugatti jumped on the black Friday bandwagon with a special edition called the Chiron Noire.

It comes in two versions; Élégance and Sportive and both get all-black treatment.

The Élégance version is completed in exposed carbon fibre finished in black (of course). The Bugatti “Macaron” emblem is made out of solid silver and exclusively refined black enamel. The C-shaped Bugatti signature line is finished in matte polished aluminium and is milled from solid metal. It also gets carbon mirrors, a carbon and polished engine cover. Completing the makeover is a set of new Caractère wheels covering black calipers.

Bugatti is building 20 units of the Noire special edition with a €3 million price tag.

Bugatti reveals two special-edition Chiron models

Created in tribute to the original La Voiture Noire, the two models feature tweaked body work and cost £2.56m

Bugatti has unveiled two special editions of its Chiron hypercar, the Chiron Noire Sportive and the Chiron Noire Élégance, both created as a tribute to the original La Voiture Noire, a rare Bugatti built in the thirties.

Earlier this year, the brand revealed a modern-day La Voiture Noire2, described as a “modern interpretation of the coupé... created as the ultimate Gran Tourismo for Bugatti enthusiasts”. Thanks to the continued interest in the one-off, the maker has now introduced these two special editions. Both use the same mechanical set-up as the standard Chiron, including its 8.0-litre 16-cylinder engine.

Bugatti Veyron Maintenance Costs Are Astronomical

To start off, Bugatti recommends you keep your Veyron in optimum condition just in case you decide to hop in one day and do 250 mph (400 km/h). All fluids need to be changed once a year at a cool $25,000 (approx. R367k). Why so much you may ask? The Veyron has a whopping 16 drain plugs or twice as many compared to another exotic yet much more affordable performance vehicle from the VW Group.

Bugatti also advises owners to replace the tyres every couple of years (2 to 3 according to Manny) setting you back $38,000 (approx. R558k). The wheels themselves need to be replaced every 10,000 miles (16,093 km) which will sting your wallet to the tune of $50,000 (approx. R734k).

Some quick and easy maths shows that maintenance costs for a Bugatti Veyron is over $100,000 in just a few years.

Bugatti confirms Chiron production will come to an end late in 2021

Bugatti has confirmed production of the W16-powered Chiron will cease at the “end of 2021”, with “fewer than 100” units of the 500-strong run still available.

However, from what we understand, the French firm will continue building derivatives based on the Chiron chassis past that date.

Fewer Than 100 Bugatti Chiron’s Available As Production Ends Next Year

As production kicked off in 2016, this year marks the 5th year of the Bugatti Chiron. This means that those who are still in the market for one might want to speed things up a bit as there are now fewer than 100 of the 500 slots available for the hypercar.

According to company CEO Stephen Winkelmann, the brand estimates that all 500 examples of the limited-run model will have been sold out by the end of 2021. This excludes the Divo and Centodieci.

Bugatti’s W16 Here To Stay ‘For Next Decade’ Says CEO

It is no secret that downsizing is the major trend for automotive manufacturers at the moment but according to Bugatti CEO, the firms massive quad-turbo W16 still has a fair bit of life left in it.

Stephen Winkelmann, Bugatti boss, did admit that they have a fair selection of engines to choose from the Volkswagen Group lineup but that the “mission for a Bugatti is a different one” to the group’s other brands.

“The W16 has, in my opinion, an opportunity for the future. It’s a USP which is not diminishing in value.” He added that Volkswagen Group boss Herbert Diess “knows the value of a W16 engine”.

Talking more broadly about internal combustion engines, he said: “If it lasts another decade, ICE will be the last of a kind, and the last of a kind means it is collectable.

Bugatti's W16 engine will live on 'for next decade', says boss

Firm's CEO, Stephan Winkelmann, calls powertrain a "USP which is not diminishing in value"

Bugatti’s quad-turbo W16 powertrain has life in it yet despite the broader trend for downsizing, according to Bugatti boss Stephan Winkelmann.

He acknowledged that Bugatti could have a pool of other engine options to choose from within owner the Volkswagen’s Group arsenal, but said that the “mission for a Bugatti is a different one” to the group’s other brands.

W16 engine will survive into the ‘next decade’, says Bugatti boss

Bugatti CEO Stephan Winkelmann says the Molsheim-based firm’s W16 engine will live on into the “next decade”.

Speaking to Autocar, Winkelmann said the quad-turbo powerplant would survive the ongoing downsizing trend, pointing out the “mission for a Bugatti is a different one” to those of other Volkswagen Group brands.

“The W16 has, in my opinion, an opportunity for the future. It’s a USP [unique selling point] which is not diminishing in value,” the 55-year-old told the UK publication, adding VW Group chief Herbert Diess knew “the value of a W16 engine”.

Winkelmann went on to say if internal combustion engines were largely phased out over the next decade, any remaining examples would be “the last of a kind, and the last of a kind means it is collectible”.

“If there is hybridisation, the battery will be replaced but it won’t be original. The internal combustion engine is something that will grow in value. People are buying Bugattis because they want to enjoy the ultimate performance but also – and this is legitimate – because it’s an investment.

Bugatti Chiron R Headed For Geneva Spotted In South Africa For Testing

Last week we received a bunch of images showing a collection of Bugatti Chiron’s at OR Tambo International Airport and one of them confused the car community as to which Chiron variant it was exactly.

According to TheSupercarBlog, the covered-up model in question (seen above) is apparently the Chiron R and will be debuting at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show next month. The manufacturer has already given us a teaser of the car and it seems it is right here in South Africa for some form of testing (likely high-speed hot weather).

The 250th Bugatti Chiron Is This Menacing Chiron Sport “Edition Noire Sportive”

It is crazy to think that the Bugatti Chiron has been around for nearly four years already and here we are with the 250th example complete in Chiron Sport “Edition Noire Sportive”.

As it stands, 250 cars have left the factory which leaves another 250 units left for customers to purchase and for Bugatti to build. Apparently 150 of the remaining 250 have future owners so if you want a Chiron there are likely fewer than 100 units left as you read this.
