You sure it's too big? As in the width so that it overlaps? People with 2-5m viewing distance are getting 50". You become used to the size.

Otherwise just get 43" plasma. Samsung. PS43D450.

Would not recommend Sony LCD, and they don't make plasmas.
 
The only upside of LCD over plasma in this price bracket is that the screen is matte and doesn't reflect. Another big plus of the plasma is its better viewing angles, which is quite appropriate in your unusual room layout with some seats to the sides of the TV.

I would try the new TV on your existing TV stand and see how it works. You could always get a wall mount later on. If you are going to sit in the bottom left corner most of the time, a wall mount that can swivel to rotate the TV to face you more directly might be the better option though.

Postman's suggestion of getting an AV receiver with only two front speakers initially is a good one. You might very well find that this is more than enough for your needs, if not you can always add a sub, then centre channel and later surround speakers if you wish. Some speaker brands to look at:

I'd like to add the Marantz NR range (NR1402 ~R6000, NR1602 ~R8000) as well. The benefit is that they offer great form factor (very slim compared to other receivers), without sacrificing any features. Here's a pic of mine, and as you can see it's literally about half the height of other receivers.

Pinnacle Micro sells them but they are computer suppliers and you have to be registered as a dealer to purchase from them. If you're not a dealer or retailer, your best bet would be to go to a computer store that deals with Pinnacle. The latest pricing I saw from Pinnacle was HT-CT150 @ R1699 ex Vat + retail markup, hence +- R2000. The HT-CT350 is R2099 ex Vat + retail markup, hence +-R2500.
If you're in Cape Town, you could probably approach places like Matrix Computers or L&R Computers as these guys will probably deal with Pinnacle Micro.

The bar with the built-in multiple speakers can be place either in front or above the panel and the and the sub would obviously be placed on the floor next to your tv stand. I was told though, that if you have carpeting in the room, you should place the subwoofer on a concrete slab as the carpet absorbs much of the sound and vibration.
I'm real noob when it comes to these things, so don't know much about placing of surround sound speakers and the different brands but all I can say is that I heard these types of speakers and I was really impressed by their sound, as the whole room was shaking with the bass coming from the sub.

That 51" Samsung PS51D450 has a resolution of 1356x768 though.

I thought 1920x1080 resolution was easier to achieve on smaller displays but plasmas resolution decreases as their size decreases :/

That means I'll have to get a 50" because 1920x1080 is the ideal resolution, I think :D? I measured the cabinet, I can squeeze in a 50" display :)
The 50" 1920x1080 plasmas are really expensive though, I found 2 - the LG 50PK750 @R10k and the Samsung PS51D550 @R10.2k. That's almost my whole budget :(
The Samsung is 3D, not sure about the LG though.

Will the picture quality on a 1356x768 display be noticeably different to a 1920x1080 display? I could buy the TV now and the rest of the parts 1 by 1 at a later stage, if need be.

Answers all your questions. :)

The main ideas around the HD Ready 720p vs Full HD 1080p argument are:

1) Sources and their resolution
2) Viewing distance.

If I remember correctly, none of your sources are 1080p. And, you sit outside the range where the full Full HD experience is properly perceived (2m for 50"), meaning it would be hard/impossible to tell the difference between HDR and FHD.

Get the PS51D450. ;)
