Building a NAS... advice appreciated.

Can one still use WD drives? I'd like to use some WD Green drives, but Western Dig. has got such bad rep lately.

I would rather go Seagate simply from what I have read in DR forums of late. If the WD fails it's a biatch.

Our company runs (pause as I count) 18 servers (that I'm aware off) with 2-3 drives each. We use best practice being:

- Mix your brands (similar spec) but if not possible or you want a specific brand, then always install different batches* of hard drives. The logic (and experience) is that you will get drive failure, just your reducing the risk that all your drives will fail at the same time.


*I use to work for a PC retail store that sold the most hard drives in the Helderberg and we always experienced failures in batches and always at the same time.

okay, convinced me with the WHS2 being able to act as a Time Machine. it's a Mac + PC house, so that would just make things too easy. and Dual Core 64 bit Celeron Processor it is.

...sjoe, I just had to scramble to make doubly sure I didn't just get caught out talking through my hat! And, happily, it seems not.

Also take a look at those embedded Intel Atom motherboards, low power, small form factor.
Samsung of hitatchi for HDD's. I had too many Seagate failures as of late...
