Hi everyone, I saw this board Q670 8-bay NAS motherboard is suitable for Intel 12/13/14 generation CPU |3x M.2 NVMe|8x SATA3.0|2x Intel 2.5G network port"on ali express. and decided to get it!

What is the best bang for your bucks CPU for this board?I
I would like to be able to use intel pro, this will be a proxmox host, true nas scale vm, plex and more.
Also can you actually get a good NAS case in south africa? This one is going to be a bit of a challenge I think,
I really like the jonsbo N4.
I do have 2 old power supplies but I guess an SFX power supply will be the way to go?
I will start small and expend over time....Just need to get started, so might get a single 32gb/48gb DDR5 RAM also.

Any other tips will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Ok, build so far:
- Q670 8-bay Motherboard
- Crucial Pro RAM 96GB Kit - Amazon prime - Waiting for arrival
- Jonsbo N4 case - Aliexpress - waiting for arrival
- Power supply still investigating
- Storage , Might use what I have at the moment, just 1 x18TB drive and 1 x8TB drive, not ideal but I do sync important data between the 2 + encrypted cloud backup
- NVME Will use what I have 2TB nvme for proxmox and VMs
- CPU - Still need to get , it will probably be the Intel 14500.

Couldn't resist and got 3x10TB "Renewed" seagates from Amazon.
I hope they are good...they did say "No bad sectors, less than 50 power-on hours "
My budget has been depleted for now....heheh will look for a cpu and power supply next month.

Share some pics of the Build, would love to do the same but no budget or space for something similar. Also do not forget the power usage. Enjoy your NAS.

This is much the same as my little project in this thread : https://mybroadband.co.za/forum/threads/rackmount-storage-server.1292199/

Except mine is for Rackmount stuff, and of course the project has spiraled out of control now since I am going to upgrade the Wifi and and and all to go with it.

I settled on a normal Mobo and AMD chip for the NAS box, but am toying with swapping it out for one of these NAS mobos on Aliexpress and making the AMD stuff dedicated to Proxmox since I bought a few rackmount cases and 2 of them are empty currently.

Please post an update on your experience with importing the JONSBO N4. My poor little HP N40L is starting to get very long in the tooth and I'm getting an itch to upgrade it to something more modern...

Will do,
I'm using the official store on Ali express, n4 is 73$ with a coupon and delivery is 125$!
Crazy but worth it, I think.
To my surprise they advised me they'll use FedEx.... Not too sure how I feel about it... I'll get it quickly but extra handling fees for sure.

Watching thread as I'd like to upgrade also. Let us know when the case arrives

Case is due to arrive today.
Still looking for a CPU....I can get the 14500 for R5300...is this the best "bang for your bucks" deal?
not sure if I should go for something cheaper or maybe wait for the progenix sell......

once I have the case I can see if my power supply will fit but very unlikely.....

In all honesty, I think a 14500 will be more than enough.

I'm running a Ryzen 5500GT in my NAS atm, and the amount of headroom I have is just retarded in the extreme. Even if I migrate every single Rpi and VM etc in my house, I very likely won't be taxing the processor.

Maybe @Progenix Oj101 can give me a clue if I should wait or not....
I can give you a clue.
You're throwing too much money at the problem. What kind of NAS do you plan to build? One to serve 50 users at the corporate level?
Do you know that I serve the needs of four people with an embedded solution? And the upshot is I have full control of the code, and performance levels.

What CPU do you recommend then?
This is for my home lab, serving friends and family, running a few vm's, and dockers.

Agreed.....still I feel like I can get away with a smaller CPU , can't really decide....I like the Vpro feature on the I5's.

The 1x500 is probably the most uncommon CPU in each range over the last several generations, certainly not common enough to be considered for going on special. Do you really need anything more than an i3-14100 for a NAS though?
Note OP's use case. It appears he wants to do much more than run network shares. He wants to run virtual machines and Docker images. Sounds like he really needs a DELL PowerEdge blade server

That post came a while after I'd opened the thread. I didn't refresh.

Depends on his setup , ie maybe he has some "servers" running Vmware and then the NAS is just for shared storage over iscsi to host the vms.
