A multi-storey building under construction collapsed in George on Monday, with the municipality reporting “multiple patients” involved.

The building in Victoria Street is adjacent to the George local municipality’s main offices on York Street.

“Due to the collapse of a Victoria Street building ... the municipality has closed its main building as a safety precaution until further notice,” the municipality said in one of many media statements on Monday.

“The public is urgently notified that access to Victoria Road is blocked from York Street.”

It said emergency services were on site.

MEDIA STATEMENT: Update on Building Collapse, Victoria Street - George
Issued George Municipal, 6 May 2024, 6pm

Following the collapse of a multi-storey building under construction in Victoria Street this afternoon, Disaster Service teams from George and Garden Route District Municipality are currently involved in the rescue operation. SAPS are on site.

53 Emergency personnel are on their way from the City of Cape Town and Worcester Disaster Services as well as Colin Deiner, Western Cape Provincial Disaster Services will be on site as soon as is possible to assist.

The collapse occurred just after 2pm today, 6 May with a construction crew of approximately 70 on site. 22 patients have been retrieved and sent to hospitals throughout the province. Currently the rescue operation remains underway with over 80 rescue personnel on site.

Family and friends of the construction workers involved in the incident are being given space to gather at the foyer of the main municipal building and will be assisted.

A second update will be issued at about 9pm tonight

A private residential development project it seems.

It looks like the building has a precast facade. I wonder what the internal structure is?

Also a big car park underneath, with the building suspended by columns. Almost looks like the building slipped off those columns (see pic).

This will be an interesting case.

RIP to the workers killed and my thoughts to those who have been injured.

This was a 4 story building with 2 basement levels. Very strange that no columns are visible after the collapse. I hope that those responsible for the shady work be held accountable.
Maybe not impossible that it didn't have any (reinforced concrete ones anyway) and was a masonry structure above ground? Rapid construction where some elements have not reached design strength in time maybe although low strength (Tongaat Mall) or poor design and construction (Injaka and that Jhb bridge) quite likely.

Twenty-four (24) patients have been removed from the rubble of the collapsed multi-story construction site at 75 Victoria Street, leaving fifty-one (51) persons unaccounted for.

Status of patients: 10 red / 3 yellow / 7 green / 4 blue

From the pictures it looks like the bricks were held together with sand. Or not held together...

Those concrete pillars do look rather skinny for such a big building.
